Twice, Red velvet and Blackpink are approaching the 7th year of their careers yet are still making mile stones on Korean charts and on Billboard. Twice has their highest sales recently while Red velvet also doubled their sales. Blackpink still dominates in fashion and their next album highly anticipated. But in 2nd gen, most girl groups start to decline once they reach their 7th year. Why are the 3rd gen girls still holding on so strong?
How do girl groups now still thrive 7 years into their career compared to 2nd gen?

We already saw a decline on local charts with Twice and RV, leaving only blackpink the only one
In terms of sales, international fans are known to be more loyal than the local ones. Their international fandom is also
growing, they are the majority consumers of their albums, that's why we keep seeing them having more sales

look at 4th gen ggs selling 200k-300k at debut
Even after they hit their peaks after a few years, they won't drop below 200k

TWICE's last Concerts in America during 2019 had 28k in total attendance, their most recent concerts there (2022) had 100k+ in total attendance. Their growth in popularity in America has risen to such a high level and is likely to just continue upward. It's safe to say that even without releasing any new Music, TWICE will do fine with Concerts in America and Japan.
In terms of Album Sales, TWICE's last 4 Korean Albums sold 500k+ with their most recent hitting 840k
The members have had a lot of Magazine Photoshoots, TWICE and their individuals attract Sponsorships with Mina being very popular.
So based on these metrics, you can argue that TWICE is in a better position today than they were pre-COVID, well they have dropped in the Song Charts but that just proves that it wasn't their Song Charting which attracted fans.

true tho, miss a,wonder girls, girls day and sistar are the living proof
2ne1 last single also hit #1 on melon despite being on hiatus for years
not all 2nd gen gg that disband is due to them flopping
Sistar literally got like 9 consecutive No.1 on Gaon without fail from 'So Cool' to 'Lonely', where is the decline?

The '7 year curse' for girl groups was more of a thing of the 2nd gen, in fact in the 1st gen most girl groups didn't even last that long.
K-pop has grown that much globally, that more girl groups now have a large and solid enough fanbase to sustain them beyond 7 years (depending if they and their company want to).
Big 4 groups will by default do well, and SM even have a history of groups lasting far beyond their 7 years.
That doesn't mean 3rd gen doesn't suffer from the 7 year ceiling: GFriend got disbanded, same for Lovelyz, and Mamamoo lost a member.

One of reasons why so many girl groups don't continue after the first contract is because some members or whole group decide to not renew and it's not because the group is declining but because they want to move on with their lifes. Only 3rd gen big3 groups + omg/mmm are standing and you will see how they will also start focusing on their individual careers with less group comebacks, some members of those groups will leave if it's not after the first contract, it will be after their second contract.

Mamamoo lost a member.
Wheein renewed with RBW as Mamamoo member, but she didn't renew as solo artist.
