Do you pay attention to all the instruments in a song?

  • Or do you only pay attention to the overall sound?

The first things I pay attention to are the voices and whatever else they throw right at my face. But I love instruments, so I like to listen to everything. The only downside is that it requires my active listening, so I can't do it all the time nor for every song.

    Examples:

In Queendom by Red Velvet, I love the synth in "That's our Queendom yeah".

In LOCO by ITZY, I love the guitar in the pre-chorus and the chorus.

In Coin by IU, I love the use of instruments: a funky bass, a funky guitar, a saxophone, occasional strings and an occasional jazzy piano.

What about you? Do you have any example of instruments you like?

  • Sometimes I love listening instrumentals usually bridges are the best parts :

    Savage 2:45

    mafia in the morning 2:10

    monster 2:0

  • Yeah, bridges are usually great for the instrumentation, I think they put more focus there. Even rock songs, that's where they usually put the guitar solo.

I think LOCO by ITZY has a great instrumental.

    Also LP by Red Velvet.

  • I also like to break down each track/instrument in my head as I'm listening to the songs, but I only do that once I'm familiar with them. It's really fun, because sometimes you notice stuff you've never noticed before (like in aespa's Savage as mentioned above).

Specifically, I love the slap bass before Wendy's high note in Zimzalabim, and the electric guitar towards the end of NCT 127's Punch.

  • I do like trying to catch the smaller details in songs, they can definitely make me appreciate them more.

Yeah, noticing small details also make me appreciate a song more. I was so happy when I noticed that the synth melody in "That's our Queendom yeah" was the same as the slightly different melody they sang in the behind the scenes but wasn't put in the song.

Yeah, it's fun noticing new things you hadn't before. Listening to the instrumentals can also help because the vocals can be pretty distracting. I don't do it right away either, only after I'm bopping to the song.

  • Bands do have a bigger focus on the instruments. That's what I like about bands.

It really makes you appreciate em more.

And also the members all get credited for instruments in the songs (like I have their physical albums they have individual credits for instruments for example Bass: Young K or something like that)

  • Definitely. This is why i generally dislike generic and basic songs, their instrumentals are just too simple and bland. I LMAO at this YT video of a dude creating a typical trap beat in 10 minutes. I bookmarked the part where he added the vocals, shit was HILARIOUS. Dude literally exposed the entire trap music genre with this omg.

Complexity/uniqueness will always stand out against generic boring trap beats, RnB riffs, and basically 98% of music made after 1991 X( .
