The issue about the gap between Hanteo and Gaon with NCT 127

  • In the big year of 2021 and still people don’t know the difference between Hanteo and Gaon and using the gap as a drag. The first time I saw that if I’m not wrong was with BTS back in 2017 with LY: Her and now in 2021 with NCT 127 STICKER sales.

BTS is the artist with the biggest gap between those 2 charts and the reason is super simple: they have their albums being sold in non Hanteo certified stores because HYBE and ARMYs prioritize Official local charting in each country.

The same thing is happening with NCT 127 and the same happen and will happen with other artists. For others like BTS for example the gap will be big because they are the biggest korean artist internationally and now NCT 127 after their exponential growth internationally.

You just have to take a look at STICKER debuts on tons of Official charts around the world. Sometimes you have to buy those albums in Hanteo non certified stores in order to get them to chart. The ideal thing would be having those sales to count on both but not everything is perfect.

  • Actually, the biggest reason that makes the difference is that Gaon counts the albums that are still on the shelves. Gaon counts shipments from almost all music stores and online sales sites in Korea and the world. This causes a difference between places like Hanteo that only count sales. Therefore, it causes a difference between the two chart, especially since the albums of groups such as BTS whose back catalog still sell like hot cakes are constantly ordered. Of course, every smart place would like to always stock up on albums from a group like BTS. But Hanteo is also not a 100% accurate, as it only counts the stores affiliated with them. In other words, both lists have their shortcomings.

This right here. Every chart is flawed which is why we should just celebrate success where we find them and let the rest roll off.

  • by the way BTS's Hanteo and Gaon gap has gotten smaller. This is likely cause of weverse shop. It counts for billboard and hanteo and gaon so it allows for many US ARMYs to have sales count on all 3 charts.

Could also be cause more shops are being added to hanteo (such as i think a few JPN ones) so there is less disparity. But yeah overall they do still have a pretty big gap likely cause of European shops that might not count and maybe places like target not counting for hanteo

  • idek why people bother to compare gaps when 1. it's been just over a week since sticker was released and most of their tracking days on hanteo were slow due to chuseok

    2. gaon monthly chart isn't out yet

    3. sm report is just a report, some numbers may not be accurate yet like what happened to Hot Sauce, eventually they will reach the numbers revealed by the company

That's why GAON will reduce numbers when the unsold albums get returned by the stores.

But i've never seen this happen. Gaon numbers for every Kpop group always goes up, most old stuff is hard to find or out of stock.

  • Returns are accounted at year end charts. You cannot see it for most acts really because they sell well over returns. Might be more visible for medium to smaller acts. For OOO, year end chart was 285 less than October as of sales. Clearly returns are accounted.
