We are on the same boat OP.

People should just let others define themselves. Some stans only follow closely one group but like and listen to some others so they consider themselves a Kpop stan and some are just there for one group so they are not a Kpop fan in their mind.

I had a similar experience with an Exo-L (she got into Exo during Tempo era), telling me that I am not a true Exo-L if I don't support all member equally. I basically told her that I only buy Kai solo stuff because I have limited amount of money and he is my bias, so I save money for his stuff only (and group stuff too ofc). I got into K-Pop in 2010 and I was stanning Exo since I saw their teasers.

Kpop fans both irl and online love to gatekeep this music genre. I'm not a "stan" of any group in particular aside from Snsd and Gfriend before but they're both past their heydays now and one of them disbanded. But I'm a casual fan of the overall genre/groups/soloists, that's how I describe it since stans are so adamant about having to be obsessed with many groups in order to be a "real" Kpop fan.
