  • Yup. I still use iTunes till this day. It's just so convenient. Even if you're not buying any music, it's a good place to find new stuff.

If it wasn't for iTunes, I probably wouldn't have deep dived into genres like J Pop and 80s music.

  • Except nobody really stopped using iTunes as most artists still get most of their record sales from those platforms.

6% of sales in the US come from digital album sales lolz. Streaming makes up 85% of all revenue.

But how the artists get paid depends on contracts and PUBLISHINGS. I'm still on ASCAP and the last I heard, artists still make a majority of their profits from touring and merchandise, which album sales fall under. Streaming is like 5th or 6th on the list.

  • Depends on country but i assume its dying out even where it was the leading service before the streaming era, its either spotify or apple music that people use these days.

Its funny when i see my own country or some random europen countries turn up on these itunes achivement list when it takes maybe 5 downloads to get #1 on itunes here, i dont know a single person actually using itunes in the last 10 years, but then i live in spotify land where they have about 97% of the market share.

Yes, what money the artist gets depends on their individual contract. When it comes to the revenue from the actual song sales the vast majority of it is in streaming. I'm sure for the individual artist they get more personal income from touring, though contact spits might have changed due to COVID.

Nope. If most of your revenue is coming from streaming, you better be a top 20, mayyybbbeeee 30 earner with some hella good perks and lawyer watching your contracts.

Don't be fooled; There are a LOT of broke motherfuckers in the game.

Only a fool would place their bets on revenue via streams unless you're a major, MAJOR artists and/ or you were grandfathered in via the previous generation. ORRRR, you know the independent game really well.

It just the way the contracts are structured it mostly goes to other right holders not the singers.

In 2020 in the US 85% of revenue in the music industry was from streaming.
