kpop fans will always consider non Big 3 groups nugu even when they are not.
Example : BtoB, Monsta X, Ateez, etc all are doing as good if not better than their Big 3 counterparts but they will not be talked about as much as them and no I'm not talking about said group's fans but all kpop fans in general.

When they start to sell Mid-tier group numbers and are very often talked about. The standard of course changes with each time Kpop grows.

Honestly I think physical sales isn't a good benchmark, because GG who are more popular might sell less than other more less popular BGs.
And the bar for physical sales increases like every year. If if look back majority of the 2nd Gen GGs don't even get past that, maybe not even 50k, so are we to increase the benchmark every year? Sistar is like top 5 of their generation maybe even top 3, but their sales were <30k I think? Even OnlyOneOf sell 50k
And BGs, I'ma use my faves as an example. Day6 only just recently sell past 100k for their latest album, but they are definitely a lot more popular than you think. I know I joke about them being nugu faves and all, but these "nugus" won't be able to go on 2 World Tours like you know how many groups wished they could actually go on a World Tour?
I feel like the "nugu" status is more on recognition, like how widely recognised you are in SK more importantly. Brand recognition of the group maybe? Or the group ranking on the Melon Artist Chart?
