Famous is well known yeah. Popular for me it can also mean well liked, or like 'current'?
Like let's take veteran singers for example Mariah Carey and Celine Dion. They are super famous but not exactly 'popular', like they aren't exactly what people are talking about at the current moment. Not sure if that make sense.
Like they won't be at the top of Google searches or Google trends, or have trending videos about them since they aren't the 'popular talk of the town' but they are super famous people

Ah, yeah. When you put it like that, it definitely has that undertone to it. Popular as in trendy.

Being famous is usually better than being popular.
I see fame as being relevant or known to people outside of your specialty. Like how MJ is known to people who don't care for his music or how Einstein is known to people who don't care for science
Popularity is a more restricted kind of fame, usually fan based.
