Not saying overrated characters are badly written or anything (which can be the case). Just saying maybe people rave over them a little too much.
Of course the first one who comes to mind is Lelouch from an equally overrated series. He is a discount Kira/Yagami Light IMO. Some may point out Kira as overrated himself which is fair, but Lelouch would be even more overrated. That being said, he is one of the best part of Code Geass as well.
Most popular characters and animes are overrated to some degree which is normal as popularity will bring over praising and on the flip side over scrutiny.

anyway, I haven't seen Code Geass nor Death Note in decades istg but I remember loooving Lelouch's character at the time. mmm however my opinion could be changed if I watched it recently

Don't get me wrong. I really love his design and his over the top moments
But when CG was airing, fanbase was a bit too enthusiastic about him, so in my mind he is the classic overrated character. He is still an interesting character and nothing wrong having him as your all time favorite. Pretty sure the characters I love may be considered overrated by someone else as well.

Oh yeah, he is another really classic overrated character. The whole Uchiha and Sharingan OP shenanigans are very overrated IMO.

well yeah but sometimes there will be anime which will starts with a win and in all episodes the character/his team wins game after game, and they never lose to anyone, that's not real life... I want this kind of bridge, this is why I love Diamond no Ace so much, because it's about both sides, and it shows stories of multiple characters and teams, of their wins and loses, and how this changes them, and make them grow.
