Do you think short-form content, such as TikTok, ruined K-pop fans?

  • As much as I love TikTok, especially the content coming from official K-pop accounts of groups, I also feel like it destroyed K-pop fans' attention spans.

Some groups are releasing new longer content all the time, with multiple variety shows on their YouTube channels, but it seems like nobody even talks about it because they can't be bothered to watch these episodes.

Even for popular Korean variety shows, it seems like people only watch snippets that went viral thanks to TikTok videos or X posts.

5th-gen groups, such as izna and MEOVV, are putting out new content all the time, but I still see people complaining that they don't have enough content.

K-pop fans today aren't putting in the same effort into stanning anymore. They don't actively seek out content or do their own research. Instead, they rely on tech algorithms to feed them.

  • Yes, their minds are overloaded and fatigued from processing too much info from all the tech around them...

and they can't be bothered to search for and look through long format videos anymore.

It's a good thing I avoid apps like tiktok, it may have saved my brain.

  • Not only Tiktok but Insta as well.

Technically, it only ruined the mainstream Kpop, but even the film industry as well.

I can't even count how many kids said stupid things like:

    - "I watched this movie last night."

    - "Which movie?" - I asked

    - "Names a movie."

    - "That's good, where did you watch it?" - I asked

    - "On Tiktok."

    Leaving the world. :exit-pepe:

Kids actually think they watched a whole movie or even concert, because they watched short clips.

  • Not to mention how easy it is to take something out of context and weaponize. For instance, BLACKPINK was at the center of this when people took a few seconds from their concert as indication of poor stage presence.

It has made people less able and less willing to critically think.

They do that with everyone and, as I said, even with movies. They watch a short clip and say, it's a boring movie. 🤣

  • I don't think it's just a kpop issue. A lot of songs are centered around TikTok and streaming algorithms.

I think TikTok makes companies rely less on varieties. It's much easier to schedule a TikTok challenge than to send an idol out to a variety show. Plus. it's easier to control content that is created for social media than to send an idol out to a show. Even for singing shows like Lee Mujin Service you can just watch clips of the songs and skip the interview section. This results in people skipping interview section to learn more about the idol

At the end of the day, social media curates content for the audience, and it limits discovery. There's many benefits for a company to rely on social media because it's cheaper and better chance to go viral. I don't think we have many idols going viral by doing variety content. You have some rare cases like Haewon, but even then she didn't go viral for her music content and more so for variety, which didn't impact her group much. Meanwhile, we've seen artist popularity grow from song going viral like Lisa, Kiss of Life, Red Velvet, Fifty Fifty, etc.

I agree it's ruined the general audience attention span because it's a quick way to consume content. Time is precious, and I feel most rather just watch micro-content on TikTok, IG, and Twitter than to watch content that is 10mins+ . My one major gripe about social media is how easy it is to manipulate kpop fans. A lot of the hate trains and misinformation gets started by a post on social media, and the averge fan doesn't fact check the misinformation.

    LLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLLL :pepe-joy:

Stan SEVENTEEN for variety shows that EVERYONE talks about and NEVER disappoints :finger-heart:

    In all seriousness, you're right.

It's more of a general thing but I will put more blame on the companies. The hypocrisy they display is sometimes so appallingly stupid, I can't even begin to describe it.

They shove their products in our faces then begin some campaign about promoting internet safety, limiting screentime and all that stuff. All that righteousness but they don't even set actual restrictions on the rate at which their product is being consumed.

  • im addicted to technology like i am addicted to pizzas

i know its not good but i am going to keep using

nevertheless i am 150 pages into the second volume of Marcel Prousts in search of lost time , i bought a print magazine with cash that has mostly news , ive blocked acess to the internet on my phone so i can only use it to listen to music and make phone calls and that helps. i never bought anything online anyway.

i would also like to point out though, idol content is not interesting. atleast for me. Noone has an issue seeing Wicked which is 3 hours long. The issue is people want to see idols sing and dance, not half an hour of them having pointless conversations.
