She had 2 explosive OSTs If and Can You Hear Me both in 2008 with If charting on Melon OST for over a decade consecutively. She was a household name as a singer before SNSD had Gee. She literally got famous because of her singing ability, that's how well regarded she is too this day. SNSD catapulted her existing popularity to mega stardom.

There are few successful solo vocalists pre-2010, but they were all overtaken by the "groups" wave, how many would remember say Son Dambi?

So to succeed in Kpop as a soloists, mere vocals are not enough, you need something more. And Taeyeon's is SNSD.

More to it, Taeyeon sings with very clear sound all across her range, which creates very interesting dynamic sound whenever she follows the flow of the lyrics instead of just omitted or bend it like almost all other singer. Some even bend it to the point of gibberish

Yes it's true pure singing ability in most cases won't get the best results because it's more about the overall package like looks, popularity, image (good or bad), song catchiness etc. Basically they need to be an idol more than just a vocalist. It's why many weaker singers are popular because they have great publicity whereas many stronger singers like Wendy, Luna never reach the same heights (that and SM not pushing them enough but that's another issue lol). Even someone like Hyolyn who was once considered Taeyeon rival back in 2G fell off hard ever since because of meh songs and image issues like her bullying scandal.

Taeyeon is obviously heavily boosted by her SNSD connection but at the end of the day Taeyeon got popular initially and remains popular to this day is because she is Taeyeon the singer. SNSD hasn't been full time active group since 2017 so when her previous CB was top 10 for weeks you can't say she's being propped by the SNSD brand, it's down to her (same with all the others who get acting jobs or touring without relying on SNSD connection). The only other female idol that comes to mind for having a long career as a good singing in recent times is Hwasa which shows how difficult it is.

You misread - I said "even before".

Other factors like beauty, packaging, promotions are too broad and too variable to consider for this evaluation.

And you have not said anything to dispute my primary point that "mere vocals are insufficient to have a lasting successful top notch career in kpop" it has to be "vocals+X" and that X for Taeyeon is SNSD.

It does not matter if the group goes inactive, after the legacy and fandom has been built, it will continue to payoff.

Without that X, Taeyeon would have still have a good career, but nothing compared to what she has now.

She might have another Sohyang maybe. But as you know, Sohyang while admired for her vocals, hardly has the popularity of Taeyeon.

This is such a stupid argument I always roll my eyes at it.

There are successful singer who can sing and there are successful singers who are mediocre. This neither means good vocals are NEVER needed nor does it mean good vocals are ALWAYS needed. Because that’s not how you make inferences.

People CAN become successful for different reasons and people can also remain unsuccessful for different reasons.

Having good vocals was required for Taeyeon to be successful. It may not be a requirement for some others to be successful. And these are not mutually exclusive statements.

She has a style that is unique to her. Idk i am not a vocal expert but something with the way she sings feels diffrent, her voice is so clear and unique, it really gives her songs a diffrent feeling!
