Ice cream manufacturer Baskin Robbins apologized to IVE member Jang Won-young for using the phrase "Lucky Vicky," coined by the singer, in a product name without permission.

Baskin Robbins launched the "Lucky Vicky Mochi" on Nov. 8, a week before suneung, or the College Scholastic Ability Test (CSAT), promoting it as a treat for students preparing for exams. The product, shaped like a four-leaf clover with four heart-shaped mochi pieces, came under fire due to the use of the term "Lucky Vicky" in its name.

The phrase "Lucky Vicky" was created by Jang Won-young to refer to herself, combining "lucky" with her English name, "Vicky." She initially used it on a fan platform to share her positive mindset.

The issue arose because Jang is not a commercial model for Baskin Robbins, and the company did not seek her permission to use the phrase.

"We did not carefully consider the need for prior consultation with the artist involved during the planning process," Baskin Robbins said in a press release on Monday. "We will strengthen review procedures to prevent a recurrence of similar issues."

Baskin Robbins ceased sales of the product on Nov. 9.

  • I'm sorry, I'm a huge fan of IVE but this sounds a bit silly to me, personally ^^

I know that Wony calls herself lucky Vicky, but it's not that she trademarked it or invented those words. If someone's name is Victoria, they also can't call themselves lucky Vicki? It's just a phrase, not a trademark or product name, as far as I know.

I do like her positive mindset though, it's definitely something to look up to. :-)

  • it wasnt really an issue with the phrase, i think that using the slogan and making sales with it was the issue. hence making money out of it.

    Was the term trade-marked?

So why do they have to apologize?

Having a positive mindset is great but making it seem like she invented the term is silly imo.

Thing is, she pretty much invented the term indeed and the entire korea knows it.baskin robbins was profiting from it without paying her for something that is completely associated to her image.

  • Regardless. If she "invented" it (as you claim) then she should've gotten a patent or a trademark for it.

I wouldn't say that someone publicizing a phrase means that they "invented" it but okay.

They may have been fully aware of where the phrase came from and used it to capitalize on WY's popularity. Or they had no idea and it's just a coincidence. In either case, they aren't really obligated to apologize because as you said, she doesn't own the phrase. But I'm sure Baskin Robbins doesn't want to deal with rabid kpop stans for the rest of their days.

    Yupp.

Kpop stans can be brutal about the littlest of things so I get why Baskin Robbins would want to play it safe.

I don't know if you know that but baskin-robbins have worked with several idols including nearly all sm groups and bts.

Lucky vicky was a term popularized in korea by wonyoung and if a fan look at that ice cream it's high likely they will buy because of the term association to her.

It may look like just a couple of meaningless words to you but that's because you don't live in korea and don't know the context or why baskin robbins used the term in the first place.

using something attached to wonyoung in a commercial product without paying her is just disrespectful and unprofessional. Maybe they are scared of her stans but let's not ignore that it's an ugly move regardless.

    HUH!

Let's talk about this. For example: "Boujee"/"bougie" is a popular term often used to describe something extremely expensive and luxurious..right? It is said that the word "boujee" was first used in 2016 in song by the trio Migos..right?

And no doubt, there are few maybe more companies out there who use the term in a commercial product without paying the trio Migos. Now do you believe this should be allowed?

This is a hypothetical situation that never happened and won't happen because to begin with Migos does not sell things like Jang Wonyoung does.

'kay, you just fell into my trap.

So..because Migos aren't that popular then its fine. But because Wonyoung is more popular then it is totall unacceptable??

Yes because when they used Lucky Vicky already knowing that it's associated to Wonyoung and that anything related to her sells.

No one will buy anything called boujee because Migos popularized the word. Don't you understand yet?

Okay but they didn't know tho???

I'm still hearing the what but not the why.

Whatever. I don't really care cuz I don't stan Wonyoung. Just wanted to highlight the absurdity of what you're saying but I'm not highlighting it clear enough so mb.
