How to get back into J-pop?

  • I have been quite bored of a lot of K-pop music for the past few years, so I've been revisiting older Japanese music music that I liked from back in the day: Utada, BoA, Hamasaki, X Japan, Morning Mususme, Kyary, UVERworld, etc. it made me a bit nostalgic, so I have a playlist of all of those acts, but they're not so active anymore and obviously 15-25 years later there are new artists and groups making names for themselves.

For K-pop, I usually keep track of soloist and group, nugu to superstar, releases with Kpopping:

I've been listening to the J-MELO archives to catch up, but it's a big mishmash from over the years:

Is there anything similar to Kpopping for J-pop these days? Any relatively simple way to listen to J-pop (probably not after Avex botched Sooyoung's release), or is it just YouTube, Spotify, and Apple Music and pray for titles that we can copy and paste since titles and groups will be in katakana and kanji? Who are the notable artists and releases from the last ten years to now that I should be trying out to get a feel for modern J-pop?

    Any help would be appreciated.

And if someone wants to give reccs, below are some (don't want to list all) artists and groups that I've enjoyed multiple songs from:

  • Feels likes the quality of jpop have gone down a bit or at least among the girlgroups. The only ones that constanly delivers are Perfume, but they probably don't have much time left as artists. Groups like AKB48 could have some good songs now and then, but theses days it's rare.

  • you ask me for recs and I spam you

    :hehe2:

  • Yeah, these are good. A bunch of new groups to listen in on now.

Thank you! I actually already have a Miyavi song "Other Side" too :check-bee:

  • Thank you. I'll be happy to listen to these tonight.

Also, thankfully, xx-jenn-xx , all the songs I added were on Spotify. The Japanese music industry is finally opening a bit more??

  • The Japanese music industry is finally opening a bit more??

Not for all. Namie Amuro decided to get her music removed from the internet when she ended her career. It deeply shook her fans, since nobody knows if the songs might come back someday, but most people respect her decision even if it sucks.

Starto (formerly known as Johnnys&Asociates or Johnny's Entertainment) is adding a few artists but sometimes it is not even the entire discography. You can ad any name you want to Spotify and look it up and will either not find them, just a song or only stuff after ex. members left for most. The only people with full discographies uploaded are those with special treatments like ARASHI for their 20th and EIGHT (formerly known as Kanjani8) for their 25th anniversary or Travis Japan because of the (somehow flopping) idea to produce a 'international' known JPop-group. But acts like for example KAT-TUN are only posted to Spotify since the curent line up, that means you find only songs from 2021 and newer, but nothing between 2007-2020 (due to ex. members) and Snow Man as another example only has 1 song on Spotify

It's so random, cause after Starto enabled Youtube accounts, Twitter accounts, Instagram accounts and even TikTok for their acts, you would think they have all their songs on Spotify and other streaming services by now, but nope

But most companies are mostly or even fully having stuff on streaming services and a few (not many as of now) even have subtitles (at least in English) on their videos as like artists under BMSG and Lapone Entertainment almost always have English subtitles, but if you try to look up for example people of Sony, Avex or another company, it will be hard since they most likly don't ad subtitles or only subtitle the MVs but not the vlogs etc.

most of what i listen to can be found, but there's still some instances where you can't find everything. C-Pop is the worst of everyone.

=O is it time for me to make a new J-pop playlist?

as long as everything i posted is on it 'cause i have such good taste

  • I do not think y'all understand the joy it brings to know everyone is FINALLY getting into his music and now I can talk about him without being looked at like I have a 3rd eye

    I'm gonna say it idgaf

that man is a damn DILF
