Cherish is a great song, almost as good as Magnetic. I remember people saying, at first, that Magnetic was generic, repetitive yada yada yada, and then when the song started to go viral the discourse changed fast
I feel like this time Cherish didn't go viral solely because of the recent controversies. The song is way better than aespa's and itzy's new comebacks and IVE's and NJ's last comebacks
Cherish has nowhere near the same earworm qualities as Magnetic. It also reeks of B-Side, and there were more title track worthy songs on their new mini album.
It is not a bad song but it is an awful follow up to a song that was as big as Magnetic.
It would be like NewJeans following up Attention/Hype Boy with Hurt (this isn't Hurt slander but it's not a title track worthy songs despite its greatness).
As soon as I heard Cherish, I knew it wouldn't do well digitally.
For me, it has the same 50/50 formula. A soft bop, cute, ligth and fresh, I am 110% sure that without all this HYBE mess it would go viral

Cherrish sounds very Fifty Fifty coded and if Fifty Fifty had any stans they'd probably be pissed.
Similar to new jeans last release imo this type of sound just isn’t hitting the way it did some months back.
Now we have katseye as well joining the ranks of releasing similar music.
New jeans was a much bigger name so they would still do decent but illit is a newer group with not as many hits behind them so ofc they fall much harder.
This type of mellow sound is bound to run its course I don’t think we can have mega hits from this type of sound for some time.
I don’t think there’s anything wrong with trends going up and down. If groups like their sound they should stick to it.
Aespa for example stuck to their sound even if some comebacks in between underperformed. And then had a massive hit.

It is the line distribution. Minju sings in cursive, and she got the most lines.
Controversies maybe impacted KR, but not Japan / US. Cherish is just formulaic and people are tired of the formula. Cherish isn't a bad song, but Magnetic / Touch / Cherish all have the same formula and it's just not trendy anymore. It sounds like a generic K-pop TikTok song. HYBE beat it into the ground because all they know how to do is follow trends.
It doesn't help they're going against APT which basically is THE viral song right now. ILLIT doesn't have the fanbase to keep a non-viral song relevant unlike NewJeans/aespa.
