KPop's Hall of Fame and the fallacy of longer career

  • I was not aware of KPop's Hall of Fame, the so-called K-Star Road, until recently

K-Star ROAD : Where Stars are Made
Gangnam had been the leading place of the Korean trends even before it gained worldwide recognition. More than a half of a total number of Korean entertainment…

It was established some time ago, and BTS was the last act to be added. Apparently the person who originated the idea was replaced and the new person taking over was not hot about continuing the project.

Here are the members of the KPop's Hall of Fame

    4Minute - Disbanded

    Super Junior - Moribund

    2PM - Moribund

    FT Island - Moribund

    SHINee - Active

    Miss A - Disbanded

    CNBLUE - Moribund

TVXQ! - Individual members still active, Moribund as a group

    ⑨ Girls’ Generation - Moribund

    EXO - Active

    AOA - Disbanded

    ⑫ BTS - Moribund

    B1A4 - Moribund

    VIXX - Moribund

INFINITE - Active but not much stir

KARA - had a comeback last year but mostly moribund

Block B - effectively disbanded, Zico still active

Other than Shinee, EXO and arguably BTS, none of the members of the Hall of Fame are really active. Some members are still around, but not that relevant as far as the narrative of KPop is concerned.

It is said that since there are some fans of those acts which were disbanded or became moribund, they are being kept. But the cold truth is idol acts have a shelf life. When they get older, people move on.

The shelf life of most acts are 5 years. 1 year to get established, 5 years of peak, and usually on the 7th year renegotiation for the new contract starts and some members leave, and others might stay for a while, but just to gain some time for their post idol careers.

It is very significant that the one single idol whose popularity is still going after 15 years is not a group but a soloist. The singer who has harmed KPop the most , while not considered to be important enough to be included in the KPop Hall of Fame, outlived every single act which was there when she debuted and is now battling an act which debuted this year for the yearly Melon #1.

Out of all girl groups, only Twice re-signed. (YG retains the rights for the group BlackPink but chances are with Teddy gone at most they will have one more round of promotion and concerts since they have all moved on with their lives.) Out of 4th gen, I don't know about aespa, but IVE won't re-sign as Jang Wonyoung and Ahn Yujin, having spent 10 years as part of a girl group, will move on; NewJeans will NOT re-sign; Le Sserafim might, although Sakura will probably seek her own ways at re-signing, having worked as a girl group member since 1991. Don't know about Illit - will have to see how popular the Japanese members will get.
