The Definitive 2023 Music Show Win Summary (or: It Really Was NewJeans' Year)

As many of you may know, I maintain a database of music show wins. Since we're finally done with 2023, I've decided to break down and summarise all the music show wins awarded this year.

Given that there are six music shows a week, there were 313 possible opportunities to award a win. However, music shows are often cancelled, so the actual number of wins given out was only 249.

Let's start simply with a ranking of those 249 wins by artist and by song, as shown in the two charts below:

As mentioned in the title of this thread, NewJeans was the big winner this year, which shouldn't be too surprising. IVE also did quite well, but not nearly as well as they did in 2022, when they scored a massive 32 wins.

Of course, also of note are the solo debuts of the various BTS members, Jungkook in particular. Between the four of them, they achieved 34 wins, while BTS as a group also landed 3 wins.

(G)I-dle continued their strong performance from last year, while artists showing major improvement include TXT, The Boyz, and NCT 127. On the other hand, NCT Dream, Fromis 9, and Taeyeon scored significantly fewer wins this year, as did Psy, Big Bang, and Blackpink, for obvious reasons.

Artists that received their first ever wins in 2023 consist of the following: Seventeen BSS, J-Hope, Onew, Jimin, Kai, Nmixx, Billlie, Jisoo, Lee Gi-kwang, NCT DoJaeJung, Han Seung-woo, Zerobaseone, Jungkook, Kwon Eunbi, V, Jihyo, H1-Key, BoyNextDoor, Park Jae-chan, NiziU.

Next, in the chart below, I'll provide a breakdown of this year's 249 music show wins by company:

Big Hit was the winner this year, largely due to the success of the solo debuts of BTS members. Hybe's domination is even more evident if we combine the wins of all its subsidiary companies, which add up to 101 wins in total.

The "Big Three" entertainment companies performed decently as well, SM in particular.

Kakao-owned companies Starship and IST racked up wins thanks to IVE and The Boyz.

Meanwhile, Cube's wins were completely due to (G)I-dle, and KQ's completely due to Ateez.

In the charts below, I've categorised each of the 249 wins awarded this year by artist type, and have also provided a breakdown of wins within each artist type:

Unlike 2022, when girl groups dominated, boy groups actually outperformed them this year, albeit by a small margin. It's also interesting to note that boy group wins are more evenly distributed between all the listed artists, whereas the girl group win distribution is more lopsided.

However, it was male soloists that showed by far the most improvement, scoring 49 wins this year compared to only 15 in 2022. Of course, much of this can be attributed to the multiple debuts of BTS members.

Conversely, female soloists fared much worse in 2023, achieving a mere 13 wins compared to 24 last year.

Lastly, I'll break down 2023's 249 music show wins by generation in the following charts:

It's interesting to note that the Third Generation actually performed better this year than in 2022, achieving 111 wins compared to last year's 83. Again, this is largely due to the wins achieved by BTS members.

Within the Fourth Generation, girl groups do come out head, with their 84 wins being over double of what their boy group colleagues achieved. However, in the Third Generation, the boy groups absolutely dominate the girl groups, with 47 wins versus 6 wins.

I actually didn't know that 2023 was the Year of the Rabbit! But it'll be interesting to see if NewJeans can keep their moment going in 2024. My guess is that they can.

I've heard people make that claim, but I don't know if it's true. However, I can say that M Countdown does not require attendance to be considered for a win. In fact, NewJeans won five times on the show.

Yes, previously, you had to attend M Countdown in order to be eligible for a win. Now, you just have to promote on *any* music show. I believe that this change happened a couple of years ago.
