Mapping Out K-Pop’s Global Dominance

  • You should change the title of this thread to:

"Stray Kids bigger than BP, BTS, Twice and NJ outside of Asia"

    :pepe-shrug:

Do….you know how percentages even work? 😭

    That’s not… what that even means. 😭

If skz has 10 listeners it’s saying 6 of them are outside Asia. But BTS could have 100 listeners and 50 are from Asia and 50 are from outside Asia.

    50 > 6.

It’s not comparing these groups but just saying the split within their fandom.

  • K-pop has not hit its peak despite what some have said. The quality of music is still high - the metrics prove it via the number of listeners globally. To have a 42% increase in streams this year compared to last for the top artists is significant.

The article is on point - the biggest three stories of this year are Newjeans, Fifty Fifty, and Jungkook.

FF defeated because of the geriatric officials running Korean cultural policies who thought an old, ne'er-do-well, never having a single success in life was more valuable than a voice which captivated the earth.

Jungkook about to be defeated by Taylor Swift next week.

Only NJ remains and Min Heejin is still keeping it in Korea.

  • Kpop struggling a bit in Europe compared to NA and SA. I wonder why kpop is bigger in SA than Europe.

As someone who lives in South America (Brazil), K-pop has been a strong niche here since 2nd generation. Groups like Super Junior, Girls' Generation, 2NE1, BIGBANG, 4Minute had strong bases here with teenagers and young adults. I didn't know anything about K-pop in 00s, but I knew these groups names, cause my friends at School were fans

Even before the expansion in K-pop's globalization, a couple of groups used to tour here regularly. Broadcast chanels used to bring festivals with many successful acts. Even BTS themselves before their stardom were touring in Latam (Brazil, Mexico and Chile) during mid 2015.

So the traction in interest for 3rd and 4th gen groups wasn't really hard.

Yeah I know kpop was relative popular in South America since the 2nd generation, still a bit strange why it seems more popular in South America than in Europe. But when I think on it.... South Americans in general are not that good in english compared in Europe, so maybe for south americans it does not matter so much if the songs are in english or korean.

    This did not age well…..
