Honestly I feel like it was just JYP doing them dirty, they treated them sooo bad when they were in the company. At a certain point it was like JYP lost hope in them because they wanted them to be big, so they just stopped giving them quality music, and stopped promoting them well. The only big hit they had was Just right and maybe If you do (could be wrong on that) but to relate it to Stray Kids, 3Racha contributed to their popularity a lot with their producing and music quality over the years (JYP barely let GOT7 self compose JB always got his songs turned down by JYP), only since god's menu I feel like JYP is taking them seriously as a group which is why their so big now. Got7 was and is still so funny and entertaining, but their music didn't really appeal to kpop fans like stray kids music does. In my opinion JYP had no clue how to market got7 as a group, to me their music always felt like they never had their own concrete sound whereas Stray kids has always had their own unique sound and style of music.

I donโt like stray kids music but I see why other people might like it. They have a clear identity in comparison with got7.
Their rappers are also better. Some got7 songs are kinda nice but the rap parts sometimes feel unnecessary

They were never going to be as big as Stray Kids, They seems a fairly know group, but this popularity does not translate to sales nor hits
but regardless they had a few problems playing against them:
- Their company hated them
- Not a specific sound and concept people can easily recognize
- The most famous member Jackson seems to attract a more casual crowd instead of hardcore fans
- Got quickly outpaced by new groups when kpop became global
- No strong footing in any big market to keep them afloat
- Competition with stronger groups (read EBS and NCT) set them to be an afterthought to new kpop fans (4th gen stans basically)
- Got quickly replaced by their company after Stray breaktrough
In summary, Got7 was an early 3rd gen group who failed to have a breaktrough and amount a big fandom in their rookie years and when finally got their chance to grown with the increasing popularity in late 3rd gen was screwed by their company and were never able to get space in 4th gen playground

Stray Kids has Bang Chan, Changbin and Han in the same group. They could do themselves what could be harder for JYPE to achieve: giving the group a distinctive artistic direction and image.
For me, this is the main point that held GOT7 back and they couldn't have any breakthrough moment. When they were more active and I was watching them for a far, I always had the impression each comeback they were trying a bit of all hoping something sticks.
We are lowkey watching JYPE commiting the same mistakes to NMIXX in from of our eyes.

They did really well. I think they were top 3 boy group at some point, but Kpop wasn't at the level that it is now in the West, and that is exactly where Stray Kids do really well.

Are we gonna pretend GOT7 wasn't at some point one of the biggest kpop boygroups internationally? They didn't get as big as Stray Kids is because contrarily to them they werent active at a time when Kpop was as big as it is nowadays.

I do think they would sell much more than they used to sell, of course, due to industry's growth but I don't think they would be as big as Stray Kids. No in the way they were being handled and marketed.
For you to have an idea, until 2020, GOT7's highest selling album was released in 2017. Their popularity stagnated very fast for a boygroup, since they struggled to have more popular songs either domestically or internationally to grow a fandom.
Despite the global expansion of K-pop, and everyone's sales were getting bigger in 2018 and 2019, theirs didn't have any expressive growth. They came to surpass their highest selling album only in 2020, during the pandemic, but still It was 2-3x less than the growth their peers Seventeen and NCT achieved.
They have never had a breakthrough as group even in big markets that have been open to K-pop since 2nd gen such as Japan and China, where Stray Kids did.
