Why are some EXO-L suggesting a boycott for the next comeback?

  • I see some ExoL around, suggesting to boycott the next comeback? will there be any benefit though?

Im not sure how it is a win-win situation for a full support, or a boycott.

Why did the suggestion for comeback boycott/support come, in the first place?

SM are powerful enough, to not be majorly effected. will boycotts help them in anyway?

  • I believe is a good idea. This is bad publicity for SM and they can hurt the company where it hurts more, the money. The idols can survive a bad comeback or two.
Btw, what else do you suggest as protest?

  • some fans are upset with SM and don't to support the company anymore. others want to support the comeback because it's been a long time since exo had one or want some achievements to brag about.

either way SM will mediaplay it against CBX, if the comeback flops it's because of CBX, if the comeback does well it's all thanks to the loyal remaining members. so just do what you want, don't listen to people guilt tripping you.

  • I see a lot of people comparing it to the Loona situation or Shinee situation and thinking that the same thing will benefit EXO here but I don't think it will as it's a different situation.

Admittedly I don't know much about the Loona situation but from what I have gathered from seeing people talk about it, the company was trying to force the members to release an album to cover up the Chuu scandal (forgive me if this is incorrect). In the Shinee situation, the company was trying to force fans to accept a subpar venue for their first concert/fanmeet since Taem's discharge. Something that even the members did not want.

Both these situations, the company was trying to force the fans to accept something that they and the members did not want so boycotting it was a way of showing the company they aren't going to accept just anything.

With the EXO comeback, the members want it, the fans want it. Xiumin, Baek and Chen have all expressed there desire to remain in EXO even with their lawsuit, they have participated in the MV filming even with the lawsuit. All signs are pointing to the members wanting this comeback to continue so why boycott something they want. Fans cannot really do anything to help the lawsuit other than showing SM that EXO has a huge amount of support on their side, that EXOL support EXO (and don't believe the bs that SM is spouting about this whole situation).

I get people not wanting to support it as they don't want the money to go to SM, that they want to show SM that they support EXO, but in this situation I don't know if a boycott is going to have the same effect as Loona and Shinee.

While a lot of people think the boycott would work, more people seem to think the opposite is true. Making EXO as invaluable to the company as they possibly can. Making this comeback hella successful and showing both SM and the investors that EXO are a huge part of the company and they are going to take a massive hit without them. Supporting the album/comeback could likely give EXO more bargaining power.

But also, it's SM and self-destruction, self-sabotage and stubbornness is their motto so fans and EXO may lose either way.

Of course, if fans want to continue to boycott it's their money, it's their choice and they should not feel pressured either way.

  • The question is, would this boycott affect the company more or affect the members more?

For loona, it affects the company more because loona is the only source that bbc had while the loona girls had nothing to lose (except their enforced debt from the contract). So in this one, the boycott is somewhat having enough power to stand against bbc...

While for SM tho, they had other groups that could generates money for them. In here, boycotting seems less powerful against SM, it didn't had much bargaining power.

I even think that this could be a backlash to the members, since SM can harshly force them to persuade the fandom.

But if the goal of the boycott itself is to free the member from SM, then I think it can still work somehow, but we still need to see how cbx's lawsuit will work for them.

You basically summed it up really well with how I feel about this whole thing. If CBX themselves didnt want to go ahead with the comeback, then as fans we should be on their side and boycott. But they themselves expressed they want to continue promoting with EXO so why would there be a need for a boycott? If anything, we need to show our support to show SM how valuable EXO is and how losing them would be a huge waste.

Comparing it to Loona makes no sense because Loona members didn't even want the comeback and theyre BBC's only group and money maker. While SM has other groups, boycotting would not hurt them as much

  • I wonder how it's even possible for fans to fully enjoy a comeback with all this going on in the background

A decent company would sort out the legal issues first before rolling out a comeback. But it's SM so....

Its definitely due to selfishness since exols haven't had a comeback in a long time. Thats why a lot of them are wanting this comeback to happen with ot8. And the members have been hyping it up since the beginning of the year and have expressed their desire to meeting the fans again so it only fueled exo-ls feelings.

But I also wish the legal issues could be sorted out first but with legal battles that could take months to years before it comes to an end. no one is winning in this situation

  • They just want to hurt SM where it hurts them the most. Problem is this could be a double-edged sword: EXO comeback fails, SM has ammunition to keep reducing EXO promotions or disband them if they want to set an example and make them look as troublemakers when they are not even that profitable to the company. EXO comebacks is mega successful and most of the money goes to SM, so in the end they end up benefitting from either scenario.

I don't know how the whole situation is going to play out and seeing SM still posting, mostly Baekhyun things, in their official accounts, have me utterly confused. So all I have is trusting EXO and hoping EXO and EXO-L's came out with a positive resolution out of this (even if this marks the beginning of EXO leaving SM).

  • The boycott won't happen

Some Exo-L may but it'll not be successful.
