The concept of aespa feels much more nostalgic to me than that of NewJeans

  • This is an unpopular opinion, because I feel like the popular narrative is that women in their twenties like NewJeans for their nostalgic concept, while aespa's concept is supposed to be all futuristic because of their metaverse storyline.

Maybe it's because I didn't grow up in SK, or the US (which mostly inspired these trends I think) or because my experience with friendships was far from great during that age, but as a woman in her late twenties, NewJeans' concept just doesn't feel nostalgic to me at all. I don't dislike it, it seems fun (obligatory "except MHJ being a creep" caveat, of course) and a little retro, but I don't really feel like I am part of the target audience.

On the other hand, aespa's concept reminds me a lot of tv shows I watched when I was a child/ in my early teens; personally, the first one that comes to mind is Winx Club. Like, the whole thing with two separate worlds, a group of girls with alter egos fighting evil, each one having a unique power, etc. is basically a magical girl story, except this one is more about technology than magic, of course. And I used to love watching shows like that lol

I had this exact conversation with a friend, talking about how aespa is the only 4th gen group I vibe with because they are the only ones who make me feel nostalgic.

NewJeans and aespa are both based on Y2K nostalgia, just very different Y2K trends.

NewJeans is reminds me more of Aaliyah and that RnB cool kind of Y2K, whereas aespa is Evanescence meets t.A.T.u.

aespa would be the kid who shopped at Hot Topic and New Jeans would be the kid shopping at Wet Seal.

And their deeper concepts I think reflect that, aespa's storyline probably appeals to a lot of us Y2K millenials who watched stuff like Winx Club and Sailor Moon, and a lot of probably shopped at Hot Topic.

  • Yes, it's one of the few franchises from 2001 that is still going strong

  • Obviously. It is because the Kpop growth era started in 2008, so for most Kpop fans the nostalgia associates with this era between 2008 and 2012 when 2nd gen peaked.
