RE : Why did Yena tank hard this cb after Smiley did so well?

  • She used same formula for her song. She should have done something a bit different. She doesn't have a set fanbase either. Also lbr it's very difficult to maintain a solo career in sk. Very few can

She'll be just fine no matter where she charts though.

As for why she flopped, i think Newbeans stole all her thunder.

  • I said it when the song came out, and I'll say it again. Smartphone is not as catchy.

I knew what the keypoint/killing part was in Smiley and it was infectious. I have no idea what it is on Smartphone. I don't think the formula was the issue, but the fact the song just wasn't catchy,

Formula is same as smiley. Pretty much similar songs. But it's a second rate smiley. Like u mentioned no catchy and memorable parts.

  • The song is just so-so compare to Smiley, since she doesn't have strong fanbase for now and depend on public, that would be a bit hard if she only depends on the same type of song

  • adding on, her smiley CB was also minorly riding on the fact that she's yet another IZ*ONE member to debut after Wonyoung, Yuijn, etc.

Plus, I'd say if she'd laid into her interesting beat at 0:25 later on in the song, it'd do pretty good.

Upsahl's People I don't like song has a similar beat near the opening...

I wonder if she can take inspo from nugu western artists. ( I dunno if upsahl is a nugu btw)

Yeah, I personally don't think it's the formula that is the issue. Plenty of artists use the same formula and have great success doing that. Eventually they need to switch it up, but just look at artists like Sunmi. Her first few singles after leaving JYPE/Gashina followed similar formulas and were hits. It took her a few more releases to start declining. Nothing wrong with having a sound and image as an artist. As long as the songs are good.

I think the formula could have worked at least a couple more times before they needed to switch it up if they had a stronger chorus.

Yeah I agree that no need to change concept and sound but the song is underwhelming. It didn't serve much.

  • I dont think the formula is the issue either. Coming from a fan, I love the song and album and loved that she stuck to something similar. I wanted more infectious Yena and she delivered. The song was catchy, the choreo is super cute, I loved everything about it.

It's possible her debut had more curiosity and interest due to her being an IzOne member and the hype around that time and the comeback is just novelty wearing off.

The same formula may hurt general interest but I think it helps develop a strong fanbase for herself. Let's see how she does next comeback

But Eunbi and Yuri should have charted too with their debuts if IZ*One curiosity was a thing. But that wasn't really the case. I have a feeling that Yena was the outlier. Maybe because of Bibi's attachment? Or maybe because the song Smiley was a novelty by itself and the novelty wore off? But regardless......the IZ*One girls all sell well and they continue to do so so that tells me that their fanbases are strong and will remain strong, which is what matters in the end. IZ*One was never really dependent on the public anyways (only Wonyoung had the public draw tbh).

  • idk why she would pursue a solo career

she could’ve debuted in a group and then gone solo after a while. the industry is ruthless and it’s harder for soloists to make their mark

  • Bibi is popular in the khh crowd but its true that she doesnt have the highest charting normally

I think this was her best charting song this year

Ah. I mean.....that's not bad though. It means she's known at least. She could have pulled Smiley up to chart at least within the top 100 and then the song carried itself the rest of the way. I always feel like getting top 100 is the real struggle. After that, a song quality can do the rest of the work.

I always wanted Yena to stay in a group. She shines 100x brighter when she can interact with others. I was actually heartbroken when she didn't end up joining Everglow...

    :pepe-sad:

(although tbh I dont think she would have saved Everglow at all in Korea but at least their sales would have been up)
