    Whyknock

    Worrying about KPop's Future

    asks this question

    Why

Those who sell millions of albums

have to have a concert in a venue

    smaller than

    someone

    who will

    never sell

    a million

    single album?

  • Because the general public of Korea, who don't waste money on physical albums, never listened to, but to have as fan swag,

Will turn up to actually listen to someone's music which they have loved for the past 12 years, without fail.

  • There’s only one act with the most million albums sales can gather the most concert audience too. So it’s not a rule that the most sold albums will have the least concert audience.

Anyway, I noticed Hybe always are conservative about their concerts.. txt’s concerts in the states were small even though there were much higher demand. BTS was also quite conservative before and army practically pushed for more dates and bigger venues. So you just need to give them time.

  • Oh and as convenient for your narrative, you ignore the "digital monster" in the room..

Where she outsells everybody and their aunt in Korea.

You are infecting BlackpinkHouse as well, who is using album sales are evidence of next IU - Jo Yuri or Yena...

Physicals are the Grass Courts of Kpop, just winning there will not be enough to take the ATP rankings.

Concerts are clay and the most played surface hard court are the digitals.

While physicals are good money and proof of growing fandom, it means nothing to GP, who will always outnumber the fans.

Remember from the perspective of one group, the fandoms of all other groups are general public or worse - rivals.

So GP numbers will always be more than fan numbers.

  • isn't the right question "why is one of the most popular act of the last decade just now escaping venues that barely listened artists in korea are seamlessly doing?" ?

The acts which have filled Jamsil main from Kpop is just 3 - GOD, EXO & BTS.

Rest have been foreign acts or non Kpop.

So it is not that usual.

IU concerts have been doing the usual 5000, 11000, 15000 range.

Secondly Koreans don't have a concert going culture, so it takes fandoms to fill the seats. As Whyknock pointed out, it is far easier to fill large venues in the West or Japan,

Japan particularly is big on meet and greet interaction . Hence the whole concept of AKB.

It takes an IU to pull GP to the concerts, others need fandoms - though it is difficult to tell the 2 apart, a decent way is the physical sales

More the physical sales, more the fandom.

Hence this post by whyknock wondering why acts with more album sales >> more fans are doing smaller venues, while the act with lesser album sales is doing the largest venue.

Hence IU is an anamoly.. this concert is an attempt to prove that her hold on GP is strong enough to compensate for the lack of massive fandom.

(Sorry, bit of an unorganised answer.. Typing on the move)

  • More the physical sales, more the fandom.

is it tho? music consumption changes, 10 years ago maybe you would have been right but now digitals is the prevalent source of music... i don't think that fandom's bulk buys means you have a bigger fandom just a more devoted one. anyway a high% of those sales are outside of korea so it does not even matter

Yes, digitals are the prevalent medium of music, that is why it would be only fans who would spend on a physical, which mostly they wouldn't be listening, just having as a collectible.

And yes, we can't determine the size of the fandom based on sales, because of bulk buying which will incorrectly show a larger fandom or crowd sourced buying, which will incorrectly show a smaller fandom.

But is there any other way to assess the fandom - but for physical sales?

Even providing for inaccuracies, it is the best metric for a fandom.

  • How is people turning up on every comeback for years not fandom tho? you can be a "fan" and not a "stan"

if someone can't afford merch are they not a fan?

I think this has been discussed before.. there are no good definitions in K-pop, including for a fan .. Or a stan..

Yes one could be a fan or even a stan without purchasing any merchandise..

But it would only be a fan or a stan, who would buy merchandise.

Hybe and some other companies tend to be too conservative. SM used to be more cavalier about this, not minding empty seats sometimes, but now companies have gotten a lot tighter.

Still I do think Hybe should be more aggressive because at times it is too slow reacting on pressing issues.

  • isn't the right question "why is one of the most popular act of the last decade just now escaping venues that barely listened artists in korea are seamlessly doing?" ?

She didn't sell too many albums and she did not have enough core fans who were willing to shell a considerable sum to attend her concerts until recently

Actually it is a harder question. A lot of fans like the acts being the acts, not necessarily for the music.

  • GOD just one day. I think HOT's 2nd round, in 2018 after the reunion arranged by Yoo Jaesuk, did sell out.

There are simply too many anomalies around Lee Jieun to write a book, but the very fact that she, not SNSD, Twice or BlackPink, enters the main stadium first , and she the first 2nd Generation act to have a 2 day concert there (JYJ's concerts there, not selling out, were both one day affairs) shows that it is really hard to induce people to attend large events in K-O-R-E-A and Lee Jieun had built her concert brand for years to raise expectation on it , which boiled for 2 years, which led to this giant move.
