RE : Why do yg boy groups flop in physical sales in contrast to sm and jyp?

  • Sounds rude but I think visuals played a part. They aren't really the most visually appealing to kpop stans.

Also yg always went with the gp appeal instead of the fandom appeal in hopes of recreating the same sensation bigbang were in 3rd gen. Changed that for treasure

We can see the change with treasure who sells well. Also bigbang sales were good enough for 2nd gen standards.

  • maybe that's why treasure is doing better since they have more conventional good looks but imo it's not so much about visuals only but about how much they connect with the fans + content there are boy groups that don't have the best visuals and still do good with physical sales.

You aren't wrong, the fan service also helps. Offensive but most of those bgs have members that are way more visually appealing than ikon and winner. Like the ones kpop stans prefer.

  • but in comparison to their peers from the other big2 companies?

If I am not wrong bigbang was only behind SM groups like tvxq and super junior in sales. I don't think so much difference is there between 2pm and bigbang.

Ikon and winner did terrible in 3rd gen sales. Very bad.

    Treasure is doing good

  • I never understood this. Maybe it's how their album sales are marketed?

But even Big Bang, the most popular boy group for years with the best, largest concert and touring numbers, had sales that werent on the same level as their popularity and that fell behind.

This is what it looked like in album sales in 2010-2015:

    EXO: 400-600k

    Super Junior: 400-600k

SNSD: 400-500k (and 1 million for their first Japanese album)

    TVXQ: 300-400k (and 600k in 2008)

    SHINee: 250-350k

    Big Bang: 250-350k

Both concert tour numbers and album sales are indicative of fanbase size.

Yet while Big Bang's concert tour numbers were in line with their popularity, album sales were a lot less.

    It's strange.

  • That's the thing bigbang was only behind SM groups who were the biggest sellers back then. I wonder if bigbang having a more balanced audience of male and female led to that. Also maybe a bit on the older side age wise?
