Changed the title of the thread from “How should I feel about non speakers of my language using it as an aesthetic?” to “How should I feel about akp users here using my language as an aesthetic?”. -

It’s Tamil and I saw someone use the letter as an aesthetic on the title, now idk if they speak the language but it’s still displeasing to see it be used like that

it's a font decorator from a font decoration website, it's not some language i just found and used things from.
sorry your offended by something that i've been using as a thread title for them for over a year
it came from there
it's nothing to do with any language.
For over a year? I hope you are kind enough to not use it anymore since I informed you that it is a language

Idk if it’s unawareness but I see kpop stans here use it as an aesthetic and its so unsettling to me
I'm pretty sure it was not used with any ill intent. Can you tell us more about why it feels so unsettling? We use letters of the English alphabet as an aesthetic in many cases. Even the user who made that thread uses the letter x in her own username as an aesthetic. I am not a Tamil speaker so I don't properly understand the significance here.

Bcos we consider it disrespectful and see it as appropriating

She doesn't see any issue because using letter from her own language is not offensive. I'd really like to understand more. Is it a pictograph that stands for a word? Perhaps like in Mandarin and it refers to something?
She didn’t even know it was a Lang before I pointed it out. And you don’t think that’s appropriating? We don’t like our MT to be used as a mere decoration. And honestly I feel upset that I have to explain why it’s offensive, feel like I would be taken more seriously it was a East Asian language

forum.allkpop.com/thread/93330/I'm sure it's unawarness, I also didn't know it's a language sign! The intention was definitely harmless here, since it looks beautiful it was used as an aesthetics, I think we often use signs we found beautiful like that and don't know they have another meaning.
Since it's bothering you, I think you should talk directly to the users using it and explain why is it displeasing for you to see it being used like that, I'm sure they'll understand.

She said she won’t remove it even after I told her it’s disrespectful. Honestly wasn’t expecting the lack of respect here towards others Lang and culture

I just saw the debate now, sorry to tag you!

Would you care to explain? I don't think she was disrespectful just for using it? It wasn't used in a disrespectful way at all. Does the sign has a special meaning?
I know that almost no one knows of my culture here also, since it's a minor one, so I think explaining why someone finds something disrespectful or appropriating would be nice in that case.
Also let's not forget
Cultural appropriation takes place when members of a majority group adopt cultural elements of a minority group in an exploitative, disrespectful, or stereotypical way.
-
Look I know that you are upset, but I hope you realize that seeking to understand and be educated when we don't have parallels in our own culture is very far from being disrespectful. You have every right to feel as you do - I'm not trying to take that away from you. I'd just like to understand more of your perspective and the differences between our cultures.

First of all, my responses to this isn't disrespecting anyone it's extreme confusion. Over something I found on a free site and clearly provided as a reference. I'm not RACIST or appropriating anything. That's extremely offensive in itself, when you call me names why would I want to comply? That's not the way someone should handle something. In my defense it looks like a squiggly heart. I don't feel that I'm doing anything wrong with something I have used for this particular group because i find it pretty for over a year and have been updating their threads quite often. I'm simply baffled. I'm American, It doesn't looks like a language to me and when someone provided a link I don't find how it's being used inappropriately or offensively. if ADMINS or MODS think I'm creating some big problem, I'll discuss with them a resolution.

Indians don't use alphabets from their own language to express text emojis and stuff like that. So I always found it weird when people from other countries use them for aesthetic purposes or emojis.
I can understand not being aware of the symbols as Indian Language letters, but at least try to be more sensitive about it when someone expresses feeling uncomfortable it (without questioning them with your own biased mindset that there's nothing with what you did).

In my culture we don’t use our language as an aesthetic. We don’t use xxxblahblahxxxx. It’s very important for us to respect it. Someone used it as an aesthetic without even releasing it’s a language( which is okay when being unaware) now that I have explained that it’s not respectful I have them telling no bcos they don’t think it’s bad and bcos it looks like a heart. If you want more understanding you can Google why Tamil is treated as a important language for the speakers. Akp was my safe place, I don’t think it is anymore seeing how voice of mine regarding my practiced culture is not taken into consideration
-
Thank you! So english speakers often use initials and letters as an aesthetic as we think it looks pretty. Letters have been adapted into logos, for example the stylized W of W magazine. GQ, etc. I'm guessing that is not considered acceptable in Tamil?

I guess being a minority here means not being taken seriously even after I said it’s disrespectful, idk how to convey it to people of other races and culture when they don’t share the similar significance

This user didn’t use it bcos they found the letter pretty or styled, they used it bcos it looked like a swirly heart. I seriously dk how to explain further why it’s weird and disrespectful

Then it obv doesn’t apply to you

It’s just a horrible experience here and I’m very disappointed with the users here
-
you could've talked to the person that made the thread in the first place instead of asking for the entire forum users to get involved here
the way you are approaching this matter is not pleasing and is pretty much publicly shaming and humiliating a particular user on the forums, no wonder that user is not happy to comply with your request
-
the letters must have some cultural importance for OP to be feel so disrespected. i find it a little hard to comprehend even after reading the entire thread because i don't see letters of my language be used as an aesthetic but then again i don't think i would even care if they even were tbh. just a difference of views.

They don’t have their conversation open for me to do that. Me spreading awareness to not disrespect my culture is unacceptable?

For some cultures language is very important and their people respect it a lot. People often be careless and ignorant when it comes to culture, language they do not know. I am pretty sure those people who used as aesthetic didn't know it was language or it was by any means disrespectful because they prolly don't know how some cultures respect their language a lot. But now they know they should change it tho

Obviously not but just saying.
