1st generation and 2nd generation Kpop fans

    So I've been a Kpop for a decade now. I still remember Exo's rise, I can also remember Allkpop's debut article on BTS (crazy!), Red velvet's debut (Seulgi's pre-debut Christmas song was heavenly) and various Kdrama's that are considered old now. I don't think that I can be considered a second generation Kpop fan, because I was really into Kpop when the second generation juggernauts were post their peak era (2ne1 and snsd were already at legendary status). When Gangnam Style came out, there were talks that Kpop might finally boom in the west. I remember various posts stating there discomfort at this idea, because they had like the unknown bubble that Kpop provided.


    Now, the hallyu wave has reached the west, and Korean culture has spread everywhere. It's kind of insane how well, Kpop, Kdrama, and Korean movies are doing right now.


    To the 1st generation and second generation Kpop fans who has seen this rise happening. What has changed in the Kpop community over the past few years. Are there any Positive and/or negative changes ?

    I would say back then kpop fans did check almost every debut and had an idea of every groups sound. Mostly bc less than 10 groups were debuting each year.


    Now it's frankly impossible. I have no idea who is debuting, who is coming back, who is disbanding. Things are happening too quickly.

    the positive thing is it's more global than ever, the negative thing is no one knows exactly where these groups are popular especially when it comes to hardcore fans.


    @Drew_B_Forever made a thread awhile back asking where did BTS' album sales come from even though it's counted as korean sales. No one knew other than the fact that they sold 4 million.

    Idk, for me I never bought merch before and was very shy about kpop so few people knew about it being a hobby back then.

    After I came back the competitive spirit has gotten way worse but now it's easier to support albums because I can actually ship it lol


    Also, I used to know all members from groups I listened to but now this seems impossible. Only for groups I stan hard or smaller ones.

    It is now easier to attend concerts, buy albums, and support a group with money (instead of just watching youtube)

    I prefer idol variety shows from before like members from different groups on star golden bell and things like star dance battle

    i miss variety shows from 2nd gen now I barely watch any idol variety show

    Better: Choreography has gotten cleaner, idol concerts are more accessible, kpop is still niche but also global at the same time, more female idols involved in songwriting and production, fandoms are truly global, more social media access to idols and idol content (yay subs!), The Show provides chances for rookie groups to win


    Worse: Hardly any interactions between groups (especially boy and girl groups), a lot of repeated concepts/sounds, less vocal-focused groups and lack of live singing, too much emphasis on charts/streams/album sales, inflated wins on music shows overestimate a group's popularity (there are more music shows now), lack of respect for senior idols (pre-third gen), survival shows that are rigged from the beginning

    recently shinhwa appeared on a tv show and it made me emotional

    so i will drop some of my favorite songs from them
