Differences between 1st, 2nd and 3rd Generations idols.

  • 1st Generation - Started by Seo Taiji and Boys success. H.O.T, G.O.D, Fin-KL, Sech Kies, S.E.S, Shinhwa etc.

    Perks:

The initiator of K-pop. They are the REAL FIRST of everything. Started the fandom culture. Since there were no digital songs, their physical sales were super high(Most sales are still unrivaled)

    Disadvantages:

Unfair contracts, zero international exposure, horrendous style and fashion.

THERE IS A GAP OF YEARS BETWEEN THE FIRST AND SECOND GENERATION AS THE KPOP-GROUP HYPE WENT DOWN. THIS WAS THE SOLOIST ERA; RAIN, LEE HYORI, BOA etc.

2nd Generation -Initiated by DBSK. Super Junior SS501, Big Bang, BEAST, Wonder Girls, SNSD, KARA, 2NE1, 2PM, 4minute, Fx, Shinee etc.

    Perks:

The start of Hallyu wave(From Japan and to mostly Asian countries). The start of international fandom and subbing teams(Cassiopeia as the initiator) This was the golden era of K-pop(in Korea). There were literally idols in every tv shows. There were so many idol centered shows. Idols were the craze, hence maximum exposure to the public. Idols musics were therefore became public friendly. Plus, since Korea just went through the soloist era, the public were more accepting of kpop groups.

    Disadvantages:

Medium for wider international exposure were limited. Youtube etc, was not as it is now. Hence, smaller international exposure. Horrendous styling and fashion(STILL)

    2.5nd Generation (SPECIAL CASES)

where the group that debuted during 2nd generation but hit the top during 3rd gen era (APINK , EXID , AOA , GIRLS DAY)

3rd Generation (Groups that debuted in 2013 and/or get popular afterwards). EXO, BTS, TWICE,BLACKPINK,NCT etc

    Perks:

They are continuing 2nd gen pathways, hence they debuted with wider international audiences. Wider international exposure(better technologies etc). Better styling in general. Easier advancement route.

    Disadvantages:

    Idol stereotyping. Over-saturated market.

4th Generation (Groups that debuted in 2018 and afterwards). GIDLE,ITZY,TXT,ATEEZ,ENHYPEN etc

    Perks:

Able to estbalished fandom, very strong base and easy to gain international fans. Somehow every group are doing good in term of physical sales

    Disasvantages

COVID-19.Dying public interest. Less exposure with the general public especially for boygroup

  • Correction, Generation 3 started in 2012, not 2013. EXO, BTOB, BAP, VIXX all debuted in 2012 and they are considered 3rd gen groups. 2012 was when the new wave of rookies started to come in, in attempt to continue what their seniors (2nd gen) have started (the hallyu wave). AOA and EXID are also part of gen 3 (not gen 2.5), considering they debuted in 2012 as well. 2012 was the year when most of 2nd gen groups started coming back once a year (already well established and becoming less active compared to their rookie days); while a whole new flood of rookies came in. Groups that debuted this year:

    - 100%

    - 15&

    - AOA

    - B.A.P

    - Big Star

    - BTOB

    - C-CLown

    - Crayon Pop

    - Cross Gene

    - Evol

    - EXID

    - EXO

    - Fiestar

    - Glam

    - Hello Venus

    - Mr.Mr

    - NU'EST

    - Spica

    - Tiny G

    - VIXX

    - Wonder Boyz

These aren't even all of the rookies, I only listed the ones the majority of people would know of. And a majority of these groups brought something new to the table, while some others were extensions of already existing concepts, or they were brother/sister groups, but overall, 2012 is the start of gen 3. If you say 2013 was the start of gen 3 then all these groups above would be considered gen 2.5, which they aren't. 2nd gen is like 2003-2010, 2011 is gen 2.5, 2012 officially marks gen 3.

  • Here's the best, most thoroughly analysed and detailed K-pop generation split up:

It clearly shows that boy groups and girl groups don't always have the same start of an era, nor need to have the same starting year.

This article dives deeper into it, with a link to the source:

While there'll always be discussion about which group belongs to which gen, this chart has been the best, most sensible mapping of the generations I've seen so far.
