ENGINEERING, BTECH(CSE). I have had enough (TW)

  • I feel for you. Engineering sucks. More than half of the courses and syllabus is outdated, and I know for sure I won't be using any of them :-(

but I'd be atleast mildly pissed off at anyone who came to an exam without studying too

almost every college student goes through their own shares of struggles so while teachers should be understanding and patient, the student has to have enough respect for them to put an actual effort too

  • well I guess university teachers are same everywhere :sweatr1:

I am doing my M.phil now and I just attend classes to fill my attendance that's it. I have learned 80% through self study and 20% by teachers during my whole 5 years of university.

  • from BTECH , I thought you were talking about biotechnology ( it is my major and I love it by my whole heart) but it actually is computer engineering. I agree with you. IT sucks. I hate computers. we had 2 or 3 subjects related to computer and I was never able to get an A in them.

    and coding :pepe-sad::pepenomad:

  • Ok, my thought on this are sort of scattered, but here goes:

To start, I'm an engineer and I love it, but I've crafted it in such a way that I actually work for a big well known design firm. I'd advise you to try for the same because truly liking what you do is more than half the battle - probably a very big portion of it if I'm honest. That said, I learned very little in university, though I do have a degree in CSE. I am self-taught in most areas because honestly, I learn things best by immersion, not just doing it one semester then peacing out.

Also, I want you to know that I have a ton of co-workers in the same field that actually have degrees outside of CSE. The true value to employers is in showing you have enough perseverance to stick out the years to get the degree. I even have some colleagues sans degree. If you can do the work, you can do the work. It usually took them longer to get there though since they had to fight for positions to build their resumes/CVs with. Just remember that if you think having a degree in CSE is the only way. It's not.

Third, some people may not consider this the best advice, but I think you should remember that to pass a course, you don't need brilliant grades. I didn't get brilliant grades in all my courses - I just passed them all. In fact in one course, I basically celebrated getting a D+ because it was still passing and I'd never have to take the course again. And guess what? My degree is still as good as anyone else's.

  • my friend...it's not the be all and end all

there are many career paths and the first job you get from your degree is very unlikely going to be your last and there is always the option of going back and studying something else...

I know it's probably tough so if you need to talk or rant you know where to find me...

  • I feel for you. Engineering sucks. More than half of the courses and syllabus is outdated, and I know for sure I won't be using any of them :-(

EXACTLY. I am from a tier-2 college and it was inevitable that I might not get an efficient syllabus or subjects related to my stream. But I was more shocked to know that my college hadn't revised the syllabus for almost 14 years. Again due to lack of research I got to know this after my 1st year.

It was already sus when I was actually digging mud for my manufacturing process lab practical, like lmao who even does that in CSE?

i mean, its mostly the teacher's fault here a lot of them are assholes

This is one of the logical reasons I feel that teachers are getting pissed. But believe me, they have crossed the line this time, they are treating each and every kid with disgust even if they are receiving a good amount of respect from the other side. It's becoming difficult to respect them when they can't respect us, every time we enter a class or give a viva they want to quarrel with students.

Thank you Ves, after reading this I feel better and calm. From time to time I forgot that getting good marks=/= my career secured. Back in my mind, I was also thinking about not getting good marks but most of my seniors advised me the same about percentages. I have maintained 80% till now, so I feel a 5 marks viva won't affect that.

I feel better now. Yesterday I had a very bad meltdown. But that meltdown kinda motivated me to be better and study hard LMAO. :groovins:

I opted for btech in mathematics and computing, starting this year. Tbh, I've seen the course structure and I like it a lot but I'm have no idea in which sector my interest actually lies or what I'm going to do after it and parents constantly asking me to try for administrative services of our country after completion of my degree which I don't want to do.;(

Though I am the last person who can give you the right advice but what I have observed around my college environment is- you need to explore a lot in your college years. Things will start making sense little by little. I never got any support from my college teachers, my friends are the ones who always helped me and shared study resources with me. Since most of the syllabus that my college teaches is outdated I need to rely more on online courses. I feel a little content that I was finally able to find a career path wherein I can get creative.

I should probably complete this degree somehow. I was on the verge of giving up yesterday. :wilds:

SOMEHOW ALMOST 1 SEM LEFT, THEN I'LL FEEL SO FREE. :flying:

engineering is really the worst thing ever

Engineering brought the worst phase in my life but I am glad that I was able to find my career path through it. :smirks:

  • I am also in my second to last semester I am doing my BS in Computer Engineering with a concentration in Computing Hardware and Architecture and a minor in Economics (yeah, I know that's a lot). I have had ups and downs since the beginning. I am not really sure why i chose this major in the first place. I have had Ds in a few courses i also had to withdraw from a course coz i knew i was going to fail it. In my 3rd year, I took a computer architecture course and i really enjoyed the class. That's when i knew that is the area I wanna specialize in. I still don't enjoy some other classes i am taking to satisfy graduation requirements but because i found hardware/architecture classes interesting i am not too bothered by it.

Like you said you enjoy UI/UX courses so focus on that. Do personal projects in the line that interests you and just do enough in other classes to pass. I have heard that GPA only really matters for the first job after that your experiences matter more. From the interviews I have done what matters more is passing across to the interviewer that you have the basic knowledge for the field you are interviewing for. Be able to talk about UX/UI projects you have done.

I found out too late that having an A is not everything. Now i am putting my efforts in my projects and research (since i plan to go to grad school later). You just have 2 semesters left it will all pass by soon. Good Luck!!!!
