This is so crazy, if you make a post slamming Snowdrop you're guaranteed 500-700 comments on it in the first few hours, and if you make a post defending it... same or even more

  • Ilbe is a forum for conservative right-wing supporters

I know what it is, unfortunately, but I missed the part where they allegedly started supporting Snowdrop so I don't know what's going on. I do know they do things like that intentionally, so if the public knows they're supporting them, they'll be even more against it.

    Edit: found some stuff

The distortion that is depicted in Snowdrop lines up with the Korean right-wing agenda, from what I've read on twitter and theqoo.

  • For everyone involved, it would've been in their best interest to just cancel the show. It's doing more damage than good at this point.

I hate this whole situation but you're probably right. I get why people would be sensitive about history distortion. I think their feelings are valid. International fans speaking over Koreans should just stop.

I get where everyone is coming from with wanting people to watch the show and see for themselves and then make the judgement, but there's no convincing people anymore it seems. They should just cut their losses, apologize and try to move on.

would also point out the owner of JTBC is Ilbe newspaper and the writer's husband was a prosecutor of protestors as spies, and she herself has links to the current right wing party and credits the leader for helping her write and they have an election coming up in March for president....

Also the main issue why we can't watch the show and make our own judgement because we don't have the indepth historical knowledge to see what is wrong, saying we can watch and judge is coming from a place of privilege and superiority, thinking we know everything about Korean history when we don't have a clue, for example the meeting in the church at first glace we would just think its a normal scene when Koreans watching see the use of churches who saved countless lives by making churches a place of refuge against violence and physically putting themselves between the NSA and students. Alot of us see the names of the characters and don't make the connections Koreans do to the real life activist they are named after. Just looking at the amount of fans who read the explanations after defending it and change sides. The NK spy excuse has been used since the 1950's to kill leaders of the opposition party and crush the demand for democracy, so its justifying far more than some stuff that happened in the 80's.

Even if we watch and try to judge we will always need Koreans to explain what's wrong with it, and thats only the people who even care enough to try and see what's wrong, most wont but even bother because they think there must be nothing wrong with it if it got made. Then there will always be people discounting their knowledge and saying what they see in the show could have happened (I've seen this excuse many times in the past couple days). Showing it at all is doing more harm than good, especially when a lot of those involved don't understand or care about the issues involved because its not their country or them who will feel the first hand effects. The only people who should be able to say 'watch and judge for yourself' should be Koreans or those who have studied Korean history.

It would the best for the actors, but not for the producers. I watched the first episodes and I can tell that it was EXPENSIVE. It really cost a lot to reproduce the atmosphere of '80 and now that they lost their investors they will have to return the money to them since their products will be blurred. And it really depends on their contract with Disney, maybe they aren't allowed to stop it or there is a big penalty.

I don't understand, they knew there will be a lot of people who will be mad, but they still signed with one of the biggest streaming platforms. Such a stupid move.

More interesting is Disney who booked this for their first Korean drama with what looks like 0 research or even asking their Korean staff.

They clearly intend to invest in more Korean dramas, and now I bet their rep isn't going to be good, no matter how rich they are I bet many people in the business will face backlash if they work with them, at least for the foreseeable future.

Thank you for this. I hope this brings more understanding to Ifans when it comes to our country especially our history. The sad part that has unfortunately made more Koreans bitter towards ifans, is the the bullshit of them invaliding our concerns.

But hey for those that think its a joke here's a way you can understand so things are fair. When an idol does something considered problematic in the west we just tell you its not a problem and get over it. Never try cancelling an idol ever again. Because that's pure hypocrisy if you xan cry about an idol talking about a members skin or weight, but totally ignore serious situations where people have died and been the victims of horrible atrocities, but will call someone out for a hairstyle but ignore babies on bayonents. Then you deserve a place worse than hell

Most probably they only looked at the cast and thought they will hit the jackpot no matter how bad it will be.

I was thinking only Jisoo and Haein are the biggest stars in this drama, but after watching the episodes immediately I recognized Yoo In Na, Hye Yoon, Park Sung Woong, Kim Jung Nan, Jung Hye Young, Jung Ae Ri, and so on. Of course, seeing those veterans everyone will think that the drama will do so well because they invested a lot to get them, but seeing the ratings for a Sat-Sun drama, not even the actors could save it.

  • I don't get one thing here

they are saying that right wing newspaper/website is writing about snowdrop asking if they can flip coin and make a turnover with plot

but in my country right-wing means nationalism, conservatism, and also believing in those all outdated things basically you could call it semi-communism shit

so I don't get an agenda why would right wing support Snowdrop

because in my country if there would be something like that then for sure right wing would be the one protesting to take this show out

    :pepe-notes:

  • Somebody explained a couple of comments earlier - the historical inaccuracies of the show go hand in hand with the right wing propaganda about that time, hence why right wingers support it and others are against it.

  • The left overs of those in power and in charge of the NSA back then are the right wing of Korea now. In fact the president who was in charge during that era recently died and the right wing went to his funeral. Snowdrop whitewashes what happened back then and give them a legit motive for all the atrocities they did, that's why they support it. Also JTBC is owned by a right wing newspaper and the writer is married to a prosecutor from that era (so would falsely accuse people of being spies and prosecute them) so they are the ones who not only made snowdrop but are also the main defence of it.

btw isn't overall politics/presidency fxxed up?

like last 3 presidents were thrown to jail because of embazzlement, bribery, etc.

this basically shows that in 'mental' way they still work like those communist parties in Soviet union or in China

Totally insanely messed up. All their living ex-presidents are in jail currently, though the former female president just got pardoned so will be out soon. Of the past 6, I think only 2 haven't had some criminal allegations brought against them.

There is an insane level of corruption, even more when you think the websites they used to spread the content from burning sun won't be affected by the legislation they brought out to deal with it, and all the stories of trainees and women in the entertainment business being forced into being escorts yet its never really been dealt with. Major reform is needed across the board, but there doesn't seem to be a party they can trust to do it.

These claims didn’t age well after Episode 5… more and more Koreans are even telling JTBC to sue those who spread false information… the viewer ratings increased again as well… The Drama is already intense, but the Drama about the Drama as well.
