Is it true?
Did more girlgroups find success in 2nd generation compared to 3rd generation and why?

Yes. Specially non big3 GG. I think 2nd gen was the peak of success within the GP by all groups, be it male or female.

GP was open to 3rd gen too and is always open to girlgroups....

Yes, a lot of groups had hits, kpop overall was more popular with the gp, just look at the top 32:

I mean during the 2nd gen idol groups were pretty much the only thing they'd listen to, along with the occasional soloist.
Even during the 3rd gen, while the GP were pretty open to idol groups, their attention spread to other musical acts/genres like soloists, rappers, trot, OSTs, etc.

Well, there were just a ton of groups in 2nd gen. People were suddenly realizing how profitable kpop could be in Asia, so lots of little companies opened up around that time and the market was really saturated. SM was releasing a new group every single year. There were also a lot of flops in that generation that no one remembers though, so maybe companies in 3rd gen decided to go a more conservative route and only release their most talented groups every few years.
4th gen seems like it might be similarly crowded, the gg showdown is going to be intense. Maybe it's ramping up again as investors realize the western market is more interested in kpop?

Osts weren't popular in 2nd gen?

3rd Gen is literally just Big 3 + Mamamoo/Gfriend/Oh My Girl, and to some extent Dreamcatcher + Momoland viral moment.
2nd Gen has so many groups that could rival top 5 at their peak years. Groups like Sistar/Kara/T-ara/Apink were the 4 huge non Big 3, and we have also groups like AOA/EXID/Girls Day/4Minute/BEG that were popular as well

I hope 4th gen is more like 2nd gen. But looking at how many groups some big company are going to debut it won't happen. It's difficult for non big3 ggs to gain attention

I think it will be better.
Right now we already have StayC which is a non-Big3 with a huge hit, and IVE is already rising. Cube also has (G)I-DLE and LIGHTSUM. Even though Everglow Korean fanbase is bad their international fanbase is better.
In fact as of now it is already better than 3rd gen. Compared to 2nd gen we'll see.
Also something I notice about the popular non Big 3 groups, most if not all of then does sexy concept with the exception of Apink. Maybe there'll be a concept or style that will suddenly appeal to the GP?

Stayc barely has a hit. ASAP is no where near say dalla dalla Or next level. It's not huge but was enough to get them some popularity. They'll need a hit bigger than ASAP. Lightsum made zero noise. Gidle can't judge until they actually make a comeback.
