I think five is a good number, anything more than that is just too confusing imo with recognizing and remembering members plus more farewells when they go in the Army.

It's a perfect number in BTS case because each member brings something to the team and stands out individually.

I don't think there is some general perfect number of members.
I believe it depends on a group, their skills, style and direction.
Same goes with the number of rappers or vocalists - it depends on a group, their music and direction. Example: If the group is not really rap-based, 3 rappers could be too much imo.
Big groups have their own advantages, while smaller ones have some other advantages.
When I got into kpop, I thought 7 members is a lot! But now not anymore
