Is eating out in restaurants overrated?

recently I went out with friends to eat out after more than a year bc of covid

It seems like prices are all inflated to hell and now there is a 30% mandatory service tip

mains were minimum 40, app 15 and with a drink another 15

With tax and service charge, it was around 100ish

Now the service was shit, food arrived cold and they refused to warm it up or change it

It didnt even tasted as good as my own cooking

With that money I can make myself lamb chops and steak dinners for 2 weeks!!!!!

The idea that we need to eat out to support food industry is also BS!

The quality of dinning has severely dropped while prices are through the roof

I prefer eating at the comforts of my own home. I do get take out occasionally, but I usually eat what I have already.

Yes and no. Home cooking is good and pretty much if you know what you're good at you'll get a nice consistent meal every time.

Eating out is shit sometimes at new places, you can get a great experience or pure garbage. But if you find good places to eat at it's almost always a good time and worth the expense.

this place was so good pre-covid, they seem to have lost alot of their old staff/chef and now it sucks

When I started uni, I liked going out to eat, discovering new food etc.

But now I'm just usually disappointed when going to a restauratnt, food is nothing special and I usually can make certain dish better and 'richer' at home.

I really hate that they switch from the conventional source of fat to just yiky vegetable oil
Imagine Italian food without olive oil, Korean food without sesame oil or Indian without ghee

It just takes out all the nice specific flavors

Timing is also important, not too early (leftovers from previous cartering), not too late (rushed preparation, cold meal or no dishes left)...

So far I didn't regret to go eat in a restaurant I've chosen.

But yeah it's expensive
