Music is not why I’m into kpop

    Don’t get me wrong EXO have EXCELLENT music. But that’s not why I’m a kpop fan.


    There is nothing kpop offers musically that I can’t find elsewhere in a language I can understand. There is musically nothing remarkably different or stand out about kpop.


    I’m not saying it’s less than say the western pop scene but what I’m saying is… it’s not different either. And hence the music was never the motivation for me to check out kpop.


    I’m sure all countries of the world have some great pop bops. But neither do I seek them out nor do I particularly care enough about them.


    So why kpop?


    The performance and theatrical elements of kpop. This is the MOST important part of kpop that made me look in its direction.


    I happened to chance this particular concert of EXO.

    And that’s the main reason why I’m an EXOL


    The thing kpop gives that the west or any country for me CANNOT give us is the experience that is so wholly and quintessentially kpop. I’m talking about the videos, the hair the choreo and everything - these were all FAR MORE important for me to be attracted to kpop than the music ever was


    For me pop music never was and never will be something extraordinary. That doesn’t mean I don’t like it. I love pop music…. it just means it’s not special or unique. And that’s okay.


    It’s okay for kpop to be musically well…not very deep and still be enjoyable. It’s okay to also admit that.

    I didn’t even see your thread. This is based on a discussion me and novemberrain had recently. And I wanted to extend that discussion to the main forum. :pepepizza:

    I agree that music isn't only/always the main part of kpop that makes it so appealing.

    Their performances are top-notch, along with visuals, styling, music and groups personalities.


    I mean, I'd choose any kpop act over this shit.

    I was more into kpop years ago than actually because of catchy songs and choreographies.

    I don't care about performances of other groups if not for who I stan so EXO.

    Still some kpop songs are actually more catchy than western pop songs imo

    This year I preferred Western pop music to kpop too

    Music is the reason I am a fan honestly.


    First of all I am a picky listener. Yes SOMETIMES I do listen to songs from different genres but I am mainly a classic rock fan. Before becoming an exo fan my playlist for the last 10 years didnt even change very much. I dont listen to radio and I dont even check new music releases bc I've never vibed with them. Yes I dont like pop music and I hate hip hop.


    So liking Exo was really unexpected for me. The music offered me sth different. It felt very different from pop/hip hop music of US or the rock music I've been listening to for years.

    The blend of different genres, beautiful voices of different members and vocal harmonies maybe these are what made it special for me.


    And as I listen to Exo's disco I was amazed even more. Various genres, styles and vibes but I enjoyed each album. Which is a first for me bc I never liked the whole disco of another group even my fav rock bands. You say it doesnt offer anything different but I dont think so. I dont know any artist who has tempo, monster, Gravity, el dorado, fall, Groove, one and only, white noise, dont go, Machine etc in their disco. If there is I will stan.


    It is both music and vocals for me. If it wasnt Exo's vocals but others I dont think I would love it that much. Bc Exo uses their vocals like instruments. And if it wasnt Exo's disco and style but another groups' yes I dont think I would be a fan. Also rap. Exo's rap doesnt feel forced, it sounds pleasing to ears and it fits.


    Performances make me appreciate them even more. And probably I wouldn't be so invested of it was just music. I would still listen to them but joining forums, following their activities, schedules, writing this essay lol no.
