The variety of successful groups of 2nd gen or the utter dominance by a few groups of 3rd gen?
In your opinion, which one is better for Kpop?

I think BTS and BP dominance at the world stage is the best thing that could have happened to kpop. People like to bring up paving the way and such... Those two groups literally are spotlighting kpop to people around the world. That can only be a good thing for the next generation.

Variety of successful groups in 2nd gen.
It was a better environment for the fans to support multiple groups, idols could interact more freely, not everything was a competition, lots of groups were able to be successful enough, more concepts were explored instead of trying to recreate a successful one, western validation wasn't that big a thing, less hate all around, MORE FUN.

from a kpop consumer perspective, not really... of course it's good for korea though. the thing is now every company wants to create their own bts and bp that the industry has become oversaturated and there's no variety anymore. every new group is the same and they all fail miserably which is sad to witness

I dont believe there are less variety today than in the past. You just need to search for it. The dominance of certain groups just make it harder for that variety to shine as it did in the previous generation.

2g. Having a bunch of great to excellent players on a team beats having a couple super stars and rest are average
Just because there are a few dominant groups out there does not make everyone or the majority "average". In my opinion, this generation is just as talented (especially when it comes to producing their own content) as the previous generation.

2n gen was way more fun imho

Maybe not average per se but certainly a few tiers behind. Let's take ggs. Right now it's BP, Twice and RV at the top aaaaaand that's it. The others can sometimes maybe pull off a hit but nowhere near as consistently and as overall packages (sales, public awareness, work outside their group etc) nowhere near close. The only other group that can even compete to a consistent level is mamamoo
Now compare 2g. There was SNSD of course with their total domination but you look SNSD there were still a a few other groups that could at least challenge them at certain things or provide a different but still successful aspect. 2ne1 showed a totally different angle on what ggs could be and they were the arguably second biggest gg. WG could get some hits and they were still well liked. Even Fx were challenging for 2nd for a little while with growing popularity until Sulli left. But that's usual big 3 stuff, it gets more interesting outside that.
Sistar and girls day were able to land number ones and were in high demand on for TV, CFs and stuff. Both started the sexy trend. Kara were massive in Japan starting hallyu there along with SNSD and back in Korea were pretty popular (until a certain incident triggered Korea). T-ara were thought to be the most similar to SNSD and were having a ton of success (until they bullying scandal hit). Apink was very popular with their cute concept and in demand on TV. Even Exid became a hot topic for a little while.
That's what my team comparison was about. 2g had more groups that found high levels of success whereas in 3g there's a very noticeable gap between big 3 and the rest.
