BTS is known by those who follow pop culture so niche to the rest of the world but well known amongst that group. But similarly to how Kpop isn't that popular with the GP, in the US only a few artist actually popular and known amongst the GP with the rest not being known or only known by a hit song.

I think that this is like otaku culture. It's mostly very niche, with a couple of anime being mainstream because they are US-friendly enough for it ( like, Pokémon ).
Most kpop is niche, but you will have something like Dynamite which is actually popular, and that some people probably don't even realize is kpop, lol.

I think it's niche and will probably remain that way. As an older fan, I can say that the way most of the groups are marketed made it a turn off for a long. The silly interview questions, focus on young girls screaming or crying made it seem like it was not for anyone above 20. It wasn't until I happened to see the video for Fake Love that I started watching more of it. Someone at work made fun of me for liking it but I made him watch the video for Boy Meets Evil from MAMA and he gained some respect for their talent.
