Do you think most of them decided to become kpop artists because of popularity rather than the love of performing?

    I just finished reading a book about comic book writing. And one part said that it is a bad idea to want to become a comic writer just because you want to become popular. (the book said similar things about wanting to be a comic writer just because of money).

    And this is what inspired this thread.


    Like do you hink they decided because of fame rather than because they like singing, dancing, rapping or performing in general?



    There have been times when I had imagined myself being a singer, and when I were younger, I had dreams about being a popular singer.

    But one of the reasons why I wanted to become a singer was because I was good at singing and loved to sing.

    I think I also wanted to be popular, but I can't remember why. Maybe because the thing about being popular seemed so... cool? (and I didn't know the dark side of it, when I was a child)



    But it would be weird if someone wanted to be a kpop artist, even though they hated singing, dancing and rapping.

    Because if someone said that about themselves, people would probably be like "then why?".

    Oh, I'm suddenly reminded of Skip-Beat, where the main character wanted to become popular in the entertainment industry just because she wanted revenge.

    I guarantee most idols followed this career path for the fame. I'm sure there are some who genuinely wanted to perform and felt this was their way through the door (although sometimes they're only doing this until they can transition into acting) but most of them just wanted the fame & potential riches.

    its quite possible some may have a bit of talent and became idols as a door to other opportunities, acting being the biggest one. There have been some idols who stopped singing to act, some who make better actors while still being an idol. The acting world has the potential for more money and opportunities.


    Some may have become one genuinely to be in a group. They probably worked hard and tried hard. Some probably got pushed into this path. You know those types of parents. It's really hard to know for sure but I think after idols leave groups to go to acting is either what they wanted the whole time or something they felt they enjoyed/were better at.

    I think getting rich is first and most important goal of most people who want to become idols. But there are some very genuine idols who wanted to become idols from their childhood because they liked what their faves did and they grew up seeing them.

    If their main goal was to make money, they would probably have focused on studying to become doctors, as it is a much safer career, and the chances of you making money as an idol are very slim. So I think the goal of most idols is to become relatively famous as a group in order to get opportunities in the artistic world (TV, acting, etc.)

    I'm going to try saying this in the most gentle way possible... Most Kpop idols were never going to be doctors, no matter how much they studied.

    Well, you don't see all of them saying "I wanted to become an idol for popularity" in interviews, do you?


    They usually say "I've been dancing and singing when I was very young and have grown to love it.

    So I've gotten comfortable performing in front of people. That was why my dream was to become an idol."

    And other variations of that.


    So, no, I genuinely believe they are Not doing it for popularity.

    That's just something that organically happens down the line.

    I remember S‍unmi saying that she became an idol trainee in order to earn money for her family, as her father's pulmonary tuberculosis meant that he couldn't provide for them.

    Not everyone can become doctors and if you don't score well in tests but can dance well and is at least passably good looking being an idol is a faster route for success

    Not sure but some people said why they are a idol and it was weird when some said the reason

    • "I am an idol cause I suck at maths" - A dude where I forgot who that even was who said that
    • "I asked Yugyeom how it was to be a trainee at JYP and he said "JYP is fun" so I decided to audition at JYP" - Kim Byeongkwan ... dude really thought trusting his childhood friend who later on ran off of JYP with his group would be a good idea ... sigh ... BK ran off of JYP himself while being a trainee and later debuted in A.C.E yeah oh well
    • Mino of WINNER apparently only auditioned at YG to proof his sister wrong, who had enough after she debuted in a group that disbanded after 3 months. Reason why her group disbanded so early was that their CEO thought being mocked for their debut song, which was alien-themed, would be enough to call it a flop and disbanding the group without ever trying more. Apparently she told Mino about it and made a scene, which got him to say he would proof her wrong that not everyone will fail and he said he will show her that he is going to make it and than auditioned at YG
    • One of the twin girls from Crayon Pop said she auditioned only cause her sister auditioned and she said since they always did the same things she thought she needed to follow her. When the group disbanded and she soemday became a streamer she revealed that she was actually the happiest when she began to live her life as a individual person, cause she realised it was tiring her to always be like her twin
    • A former member of the group JJCC that was signed with the company Jackie Chan owned said back when he made YT videos he was kinda sick of the lack of Asian representation on TV and media in Australia where he was living so he decided to go to China, he didn't even knew he auditioned for a KPop-group cause till the time he was taken by the company he had no clue for what type of media he even auditioned like he didn't even knew if he is going to act or sing ... that sounds stupid. He said when he was told he made it, he also was told to pack his things and go to Korea and he was confused cause he didn't knew any Korean at all at that time.
    • I think Eric Nam said he didn't actually wanted to become a singer, he just was in Korea and somehow got scoutet and was thinking he will not make it cause he was in his 20s already at the time.

    Safer as in job demand. Doctors can for sure find jobs as there is always demand for more doctors as many countries go into an aging society too and not enough doctors in places etc.


    As always, different people will have different reasons - it can be for the love of the music or performance, it can be the love of being an idol or celeb, provide for family or make money or it can be it just came to be by chance as in an opportunity came and they went for it etc.

    Just like many people and how they end up in their profession and career etc.
