Why MEOVV doesn't make me purr

  • Quote

I don't understand how people who love BLACKPINK don't like MEOVV.

Basically, MEOVV music, so far, lacks that face punching oomph that Blackpink has. That big, raucous, Arena venue cuntyness sound that Blackpink is known for. Kill This Love was my first ever kpop song because of how in your face it was.

    For MEOVV... well...

One song is a ballad. I don't like ballads at the best of times. I don't think any ballads would even be in my Top 20, kpop songs. Azalea by Rolling Quartz might be the closest to a ballad I like and I'm giving Number 1 Girl a chance, but that hews more towards a Taylor Swift type song more than kpop ballad. Ballads are almost "insta-ignore" for me.

The song MEOVV itself? For me it really lacked energy and oomph. It needs more to it. It felt like it was slowed down or something. I think that was exemplified by the line "Try and match my energy" delivered in a slow drawl, like it was being said by a tired retail assistant, not a hyped up, psyched up kpop slayer ready for violence. I don't feel it'd be hard for many to match the energy given. "We don't run, we don't chase 'em"... maybe run a little? Or a brisk jog?

Body is just there... its a bit repetitive, not just lyrically, but sonically as well. It never really changes or deviates for its run time. Even now, 5 minutes or so after a listen, I don't remember anything except they repeated the word body a lot.

You ever bought some food that is advertised as "spicy", or from a company known for its spicy food (it might even have a cute cartoon mascot breathing fire on the packaging), so you're like "Yeah, I could do with spicy food, bring it!" and you get a tall glass of milk or beverage ready to counter the burn, the sweat, and the red face you're expecting and love... Then take a bit or two and nothing happens? Theres a small tickle maybe, but nothing that even evokes a "phew, thats got some bite", let alone anything that makes your go red in the face and needs you reaching for the milk.

    Yeah...

They haven't completely stopped me giving them a few more tries, I might wait till they drop an album to really decide. But my enthusiasm for them is much lower than it was pre0debut.

  • ok you need to get some purr then

  • Haven't they had like 1 comeback?

Give them time to actually figure out their identity (they are literally barely 5 months old).

My general rule of thumb is three releases to win me over.

aespa on debut didn't and I was a mean ole aespa anti for... ages... It took a few good releases some years later to reel me in.

Babymonster barely even got those chances before I walked away.

Illit was doomed from the beginning because I have a distaste for survival show groups, but their first song was my last. Not the concept I like.

So MEOVV is still ahead of those two

  • Alright well I'm glad that you're giving MEOVV a chance.

  • Can't hold it against you. If you don't like the music, you don't like it. Obviously there's only 3 songs, so I do think you should continue to give them a chance, but if you don't like it, it is what it is. I follow or stan groups because I either like at least some or a majority of their music, which happens to be the case for MEOVV.

Of course I understand and even somewhat agree with superyeahs perspective, except from the lens of a BABYMONSTER stan. It surprises me that all blinks don't love them, but many don't (LIKE YOU!!!!!) and it is what it is.

    I'm a big cereal eater.

Grab a big bowl each day for breakfast

I love me some Coco Pops. Just like a chocolate milkshake, only crunchy.

Thing is, I just can't stand the knock-off/alternate brand versions of them

I know they are trying to emulate the OG Coco Pops. But I can taste the difference. I can feel the difference in texture. They get soggier in milk faster. They may be a puffed rice covered in chocolate breakfast cereal, just like Coco Pops, but they aren't anywhere as good. To the point that if I can't get OG Coco Pops, just the competitor/KO brand, I'll just go without rather than subjecting myself to a lesser product.

    So much details. :drinktears:

  • Well I don't really like the analogy, BABYMONSTER are not a lesser, soggier product, but I understand that perspective. I just don't agree with it or see it that way. To me they are not a copy, but just an embodiment of the YG style like BP and 2NE1 before them. They are not trying to be another Blackpink, because no one could ever replace BP and BABYMONSTER is their own group with different strengths.

But I can understand how you feel that way if all you have checked out is their title tracks, especially Batter Up and Sheesh which very much do feel like BP knockoff songs. And I wouldn't expect you to check out all of their other tracks if you don't like the TTs, but they are their own group.

This is the point. Part of producing a group is understanding what their product is going to be like and who will be their targeted audience.

It's been 5 months since their debut and there's no solid delivery. Their production lacks essence, lacks impact. And if that's what TBL is going for, then they are doing a great job. This is what sucks when it comes from debuting under a Big 3, the fans expect more. MEOVV could putting out more than a great nugu group.

In my defense, I really really love Toxic. But it's only their first comeback and Body isn't very impactful or original or unique. I do like MEOVV, but I understand the OP's frustration.

    Hi, hello???

There's no "solid delivery" because its not even been up to 5 months since they debuted?

Keep your eyes wide open and wait.

Yeah. No solid delivery. They've been delivering some pretty generic material and yes, I'll keep my eyes open. Cause' if there's a producer that has means to turn this around and hit it big is Teddy. MEOVV has been nothing but a great nugu group, nice songs, very talented members, but low-budget-like production, resulting in a generic and underwhelming sound and overall visual as a group, a product - and no, this is not about the members beauty.

You know people are able to like something and still criticize it, there's no need to be this sensitive. You gotta be able to criticize what you like as well, it's alright. MEOVV should be doing better by now.

I'm not being sensitive. I'm merely highlighting the fact that you are criticizing a barely 5-month old group.

Let's be real here and give them adequate time to establish their musical identity. There's no rush.

This. People don’t get how some of the members, namely Gawon and Narin, are already involved with the creative process.

Rosé actually gave some advice to them!

MEOVV will “break sumn” and “shake sumn” for sure. Anticipate.

  • They’re still extremely new, by the way. It’s only been a month and a half since they debuted.

The timing of the comeback feels a bit sudden, but that’s likely due to The Black Label wanting to release “Body” in time for their MAMA performance.

They’re going the trajectory of other groups in terms of music:

    Debut with a high-energy banger

Show off their vocals with a ballad for a small comeback

aespa and BABYMONSTER both did this as well.

People might have already forgotten, but aespa debuted with “Black Mamba” and had a small comeback by covering “Forever.”

BABYMONSTER debuted with “Batter Up” and came back with “Stuck in the Middle.”

The third comeback is where they get experimental.

This type of rollout seems common. Just wait for their next comeback.
