It seems GFriend is going to bite Hybe in the behind for a long time

  • No need to recall what happened to GFriend in 2021.

Viviz has established itself to some degree, and Yerin is finally going some places, while Sowon and Yuju are drifting around here and there, taking whatever jobs available.

However, GFriend's legacy appears to have influenced the future of Hybe a lot, since no group can be secure.

The behavior of New Jeans members cannot be explain adequately without GFriend. All of them went through Source Music, GFriend's old company, and some of the trainees might have known GFriend.

The NJ members would be very, very aware that the only person who can protect them is MHJ, since Hybe can discard them very easily like they did to GFriend, whose departure they had seen with their own eyes. Once MHJ is gone, Hybe will just milk them for whatever worth they might have, and discard them when their contracts run out.

The chief problem is that such kind of treatment could be given to any act under the Hybe organization. No one is truly safe , except BTS itself. Nuest dissolved, although Pledis, which has some degree of independence, did keep Baekho (partially because he was cheated out of Wanna One) and Hwang Minhyun (now mostly an actor). Seventeen is doing great but Fromis 9, whose contract runs out in a couple of months, will probably not be retained.

txt, who knows. Enhypen is doing nonstop full tour circles, Nonstop as I have said before

meaning Hybe is going to suck the last drop as long as it could. Its re-signing, which will flow into Illit's resigning, will probably not be pretty.

GFriend's departure basically made all Hybe acts quite insecure - they could be cut anytime.

Seventeen re-signed on 2021, and it is said that its second contract will expire in 2026. SInce they can produce themselves, it is quite possible that it won't continue with Hybe and incorporate themselves.

And who knows what will happen to BTS in 2027.

I don't know about Katseye since Geffen has a stake on it so I don't know how the contract is structured on it.

Karma is a b____ and GFriend is probably going to haunt Hybe for quite a while.

  • HYBE intoxicated the industry by its unlimited payola and fake achievement practice. I don't understand why anti-monopoly service still did not punish them for manipulations. Maybe because of my role model Mr. BANG, who is a very friendly guy that helps others to book a table in fancy restaurants.

I don't see Taehyung , who was the only BTS member who supported MHJ before, continuing with Hybe after 2027 and that will be the beginning of Hybe's end.

  • You should start with GLAM.

In any case, even in the industry where idols are effectively products, HYBE might have elevated that too assembly line production.

They can put out a new group every six months and find enough suckers to be fans.

Those fans might think their group is the greatest thing ever, but for the agency, they are entirely dispensible product with ever decreasing shelf life.

As to BTS being an exception, that too seems a fan delusion.

BTS could do BLM, preach at the UN, but are mighty silent about S Korea itself or Kpop e.g. Deepfake or this happening to their HYBE juniors.

    No influence at all?

  • But isnt fromis9 finally doing super well with their latest release? Im in korea atm and many shops have playlists with their song included. :eyes:

  • but it's not limited to just hybe though

literally every group can be cut depending on whether they bring home enough bacon or not

everyone forgets that kpop companies are a business first and foremost - not a place to make korean popular music

and if a business doesn't make money eventually it declares bankruptcy and fails

how many times have we seen nugu/less successful groups like disband within like a year of debut

how many times have we seen groups (and companies) just disappear completely without notice

hybe and other big4 companies are better than most in the sense that even if a group flops a few times they can take the hit to the bottom line

  • At least other major companies do not cut an act that unceremoniously. They tend to give the act a breather of a couple years until they figure out what to do next.

    well it's a business decision

different strokes for different company folks
