What is the longest amount of time you went without listening to K-Pop, and what did you do?

  • Mine is one week. I like Western music. It brings me back into the past.

I'm pretty sure this belongs here (The Lounge) because anyone can do anything like read biographies without listening to K-Pop for example.

  • I think my story is a little different, at first I was recently into BlockB BTS, BigBang, EXO and B.A.P and then ATEEZ had my full attention up until 2020 when I realized 2 of my twitter *friends were turning into Saesangs and kept giving me information and photos, that's when I began to change how I look into kpop and fandoms I think.

At that point after expressing my concerns to her and my worries I would decide to take time away from kpop for a total of 2 years, with a main focus on keeping up with ATEEZ, BTS and CIX being my big groups as B.A.P & BlockB went to military.

    --

I think compared to then I'm pretty healthy and enjoy kpop a lot differently, but there is some times I take a 30 day break or so, but I'm not on reddit, IG or twitter anymore so I don't completely focus on it. I enjoy other music genres and spend my time rock climbing and working out a lot of the time outside of work.

Didn't care much about Kpop anymore a few months before I left and then decided to quit. I was mostly listening to Western musicians, discovered a lot of underground artists and fell in love with new genres I didn't know about or didn't care much about before.

And then NewJeans debuted and they single-handedly pulled me back to the hellhole called Kpop. And that's how I caught up with a bunch of other 4th gen groups.

Idk i mean... I have lots of periods where i don't listen to Kpop. It just comes and goes every few weeks/months

  • same, when did you start noticing NJ? For me it was around September 2022 - I saw a vid that went viral of Danielle talking about potato pancakes - and since we have the same accents I was instantly hooked 😅

That's such a unique way to get into a group for sure lmao

Alright i'm going to yap because i just love NewJeans so much lol

I knew about NewJeans from pre-debut, back when no one knew how many members there would be nor their group name. I followed MHJ on Instagram since I loved her works with fx and Red Velvet and knew she was creating her first girl group. Took a break from Kpop and then NewJeans debuted out of nowhere. I started noticing their debut a few days after. Around the very end of July to very early August 2022. I was going on vacation to Vietnam and didn't know a new girl group debuted under HYBE. A friend then showed me a video of them introducing themselves and said one of them is Vietnamese but none of us could tell them apart except for Danielle lol. So I checked them out with the first song being Attention. I didn't have any expectations since I didn't know anything about the group. And at that point I didn't realize it was the group I followed briefly on Instagram through MHJ lol. I was instantly hooked and I remember getting goosebumps everywhere when I heard the chorus of Attention. At that point it had been a very long time since a group got me on a chokehold like that from the get go. I knew from that moment on I had to become a NewJeans fan even though I was pretty sure I would never stan a new group ever again.

I gotta say this too. I've been around in Kpop for a long time and from all the debuts I've witnessed, no other group had me wrapped around their fingers in an instant and there have been plenty of amazing debuts before NewJeans.

Oh what I would do to hear NewJeans for the first time again.

  • Ever since I got into it, I don't think there was ever a year when I didn't listen to K-pop to some extent. I did, however, go through a phase of Western pop from, say, 2015 to 2017. This was when Western pop was going through its EDM wave; you'd hear a lot of pop artists collaborating with EDM artists.

Examples of what I would listen to during that time:

  • :skull:

  • Wow so you're an OG! You still a MHJ loyalist?

But yeah NJ's debut was something else, I remember listening to Hype Boy for the first time - it was so fresh and yet so nostalgic, instantly knew it was gonna be a bop. They had such an incredible rookie start - still mad the way MAMA treated them at the awards X(

But yeah like you and me NJ made a lot of people fall in love with kpop again, that what makes them so special. I honestly never thought anything could match the euphoria I got from BIGBANG - these past couple years has been such a joy for me and tokkis alike, here's to the next 5 :pepe-toast:

Wow. Somehow I'm surprised you also feel the same way I do about BIGBANG. Their music got me into K-pop. I feel like one's attachment to a brand of music is natural. It just happens and there's no explanation to it other than pure appreciation for how it makes us feel.

I do think the MHJ loyalism is amusing, but that's just me. ^^

Kids these days will never know what it’s like to experience prime BIGBANG. I also wholeheartedly believe to this day no BG has come close to rivalling their discography, they were such pioneers along with SNSD & 2NE1 in globalising kpop. Boils my blood how Armys continue to diminish them for the sake of glorifying BTS smh.

I can see why from an outside POV, it’s very easy to come to conclusion with MHJ

Newer K-pop fans tend to be dismissive of the greatness that happened in earlier generations. It's recency bias at its finest. I'm not even saying 2nd gen is better than the more recent generations. I think all generations are pretty great in their own way.

To me, though, there was a type of magic to that time that can't be replaced. Just my experience.

Don't get me wrong. I don't have a strong opinion against MHJ. I just find the pro-MHJ coalition amusing. ^^

  • im not even lying when i say this but jb is literally the only one i like there

I agreed with superyeah at first sight
