6th Gen Kpop is Coming and Nobody wants It

It's becoming ridiculous. The difference between the 4th and 5th generation already did not make sense but this is something else.

I guess this just proves that broadcasting companies are the ones who starts (mediaplaying) the generation thing and not the big 4
5th gen with mnet - zerobaseone
6th gen with kbs

With a lot of help from fans. Fans seems to like puting their new favorite groups in to a "new generation" as a way to promote their new group "as the new thing" and the other groups as "old".

Yes, I feel the talk about the start of the 4th generation was way too earlier, groups like ITZY, Gidle are more like late 3rd generation groups and I would put Aespa as borderline late 3rd generation/very early 4th generation. Groups like NJ and Babymonster feels more like a more real border for the start of the 4th generation for the girlgroups.
Don’t forget SKZ as well, those guys are ancient yet are somehow in the same gen as NJ. But yeah i agree w ya, somewhere inbetween the pandemic should be the start of 4th gen

Incheon airport has generations nailed down! see how there’s a distinct 7 year gap between each?

I don't follow boygroups so I pretty much never add any of them in my views, becauce I just don't know enough about them. Well, I of cource have some basic knowledge about BTS, BigBang, Super Junior, etc.
But I think boygroups and girlgroups have a bit different generation cycle, the boygroups are a bit earlier. Like BigBang made the debut 2006, 2NE1 2009, Super Junior 2005, Girls' Generation 2007. BTS, 2013, Twice 2015. So it kind of lags 2-3 years maybe.

I often use the 7 years as a good time frame, even it more about change in the top groups that is important. But seven years is the normal max lengh of a kpop contract so it's also a naturual border because of that. And if you look back it's often pretty accurat. 2nd generation girlgroups about 2007-2014, 3rd about 2015-2021, 4th 2022-

JYP has always been a kpop factory pumping out groups left and right, wonder girls barely had time to breath when he debuted Miss A

This is silly! If 4th gen started in 2018 and finished in 2022, 5th gen started in 2023 and finished 2024 the maths ain’t mathing! unless 4th gen was 2018 - 2021 and 5th gen is 2021 - 2024 which makes both 3 years. That would make a lot of 4th gen groups 5th gen though
I thought 5th gen started just this year with Babymon and ILLIT.
Not saying this to start a discussion, but it shows how unclear it is when a generation started.
People used to say 4th gen started with TXT and especially ITZY in 2019, but retroactively, it seems that Stray Kids and Idle are the start. I remember when those were referred to as 3rd gen or gen 3.5, while now everyone seems to think of them as 4th gen.

No I think 5th gen would have to be 2023 as Kiss Of Life and Riize are considered 5th gen groups And 4th gen did start with Stray Kids and Gidle as it’s pretty much cemented they are 4th gen groups!
Which means 4th gen was 5 years tbh I don’t see geand being a thing in years to come, it doesn’t make much sense anymore and I think companies only advertise a new gen so they can set achievements lol

It makes no sence to call a Gidle a 4th generation group, they are in the 3rd generation with Twice, Blackpink and ITZY.
Even if Gidle and ITZY maybe are "late" 3rd generation.

Yes, Stray Kids and Gidle are cemented as 4th gen groups now, but they weren't when they had just debuted. They were just grouped under some form of 3rd gen, because there wasn't enough 4th gen out there to speak of a new gen yet, let alone define them as such.
A year later, when Itzy had just debuted, lots of people were declaring them the start of 4th gen. They were the first massive debut from a 4th gen group. Stray Kids and Idle were not nearly as established then as now. I remember lots of debating in 2019-2020 when 4th gen had started. I said this in my last post too. They became 4th gen retroactively
For me, Idle is the weirdest to think of as gen 4 somehow, but I also don't see them as gen 3. I think it doesn't help that their concept is quite different from anyone else, which makes it harder to group them.
As for 5th gen, you might well be right. In fact, you probably are right, as they tend to group groups under a later gen retroactively once a gen is more defined.
We'll see what they make of it in the future.

I think Gidle is debatable and hard to group for me (but are now usually considered 4th gen), but ITZY is definitely 4th gen. They were even widely acknowledged as such at the time. This while groups that are at the edge between gens, tend to be added to later gens after some time has passed and not to the earlier.
They debuted almost a year after Stray Kids even and everyone calls them 4th gen/

A new generation is when they replace the older ones as the dominat force. Did that change with Gidle and/or ITZY? No, Twice and BP, add to that Red Velvet if you want are was still the top groups in 2018-2019. As long as the top groups still are made up of older groups you really don't have a change.
We had a clear change from 2nd generation to 3rd generation when Twice and BP took over as nr 1 and nr 2. Not much change with groups like Gidle and ITZY. Aespa 2020? Borderline, but sure maybe we could say that is a kind of start of 4th generation because Twice was not as dominant as before. But I would say 2022-2023 with Blackpink going to sleep and the debut of NewJeans and Baby Monster (and some other groups) feels like a much more natural border between the old and the new generation of top groups.
