How significant is the popularity gap among Big Bang members? Is it more like "GD and friends," or is the popularity more balanced among them?

    Sales-wise, G-Dragon's sales are actually on par with Big Bang's, while the other members never cracked 100k. However, T.O.P never really had a full album by himself (cmiiw), and Daesung only released Japanese albums (again cmiiw). So, there's still a doubt in that.


    However, I wonder how big the popularity gap between them is. Is Big Bang situation similar to Wonyoung and Yujin with Ive, where the top two members overshadowed everyone else in the group (Ik BB members are obviously more well-known among the public)? Or is it like the Blackpink situation where Jennie and Lisa are obviously more popular, but the others are not really far behind? Or is it like Cha Eunwoo and Astro (obviously not as severe as that), where he is the face of the group, the only one that the public cares about the most, and the other members basically didn't come close to his individual popularity, and no one in the group comes close to second in terms of individual fanbase and recognition like him?


    I never stan them, so I just curious how the group dynamics when they were on their peak especially.

    GD was obviously more popular but TOP was the handsome guy who did well as an actor. And Taeyang solos did quite well too, I'd even say better than GD's.


    Daesung and Seungri on the other hand were indeed a bit below those three.


    So it is obviously not Astro situation but also not quite BP situation either due to Daesung and Seungri.


    It was more of a Bermuda triangle situation like The Boyz.

    seungri kinda climbing before the scandal iirc. mainly as the rich business guy he appeard on variety show like my ugly ducking . iirc

    daesung on the other hand kinda popular on the early years coz of the variety show.
    but the yg "exlusive" image kinda holding him back as the years goes by. and he rarely appear on variety show anymore.
    coz his character on variety show is "dumb funny guy" and i dont think yg want to assosiate with it anymore.

    Yes not entirely like Astro, but there's some eunwoo in BigBang as GD is the most popular one the face of the group as he does most of the music production sets the fashion standards nation wide and almost every kpop act follows his footsteps. So yeah it's not as bad as Astro but with jiyong and BigBang the other members mainly top and taeyang are also quite popular, not as insanely popular as him but like number 2.

    Even if all of them reached a level of popularity few other group members could compete with, id say thers a significant gap between GD and the rest when it comes to domestic popularity at least

    GD has more solo hits / better overall charting, and solo touring as well is way above the other members i think.

    That's quite a big misconception actually.


    Eyes, Nose, Lips did better than any song GD released and promoted a year prior to it. And the MV is literally just Taeyang looking at camera singing. The song went to rank #2 on the Gaon Yearly Chart behind only "Some" which was released 4 month before it. Wedding Dress is also one of the biggest songs of BigBang's overal discography.


    GD was always a bigger celebrity of course. He was idolized by the youth, he was the fashion icon and etc. But Taeyang had bigger appeal among the general music listening audience with his more ballad like songs.

    Daesung is often overlooked but he was instrumental in getting BB's name out there with the older population during his Family Outing stint. Unfortunately the car accident in 2011 basically cut short his career as a variety star.


    Taeyang solos havent done well post 2014 but he was always ranked high in those gallup idol polls. Always top 5 along with GD when they were active. ENL is also the biggest BB member solo hit. The public might not vibe with his music anymore but he's still well known and respected.


    TOP was also v popular due to his acting and good looks, but he didn't put out any albums and obvs he took a huge hit with his drug scandal and now many people are afraid to associate with him. Hopefully being in Squid Game 2 can help him bounce back.


    GD is GD.


    Not as quite as drastic as Ive but I would say GD>>>Taeyang>TOP>>Daesung
