LE SSERAFIM is being mentioned on twitter with jokes and memes about their doing too many Eve Psyche remixes. Serious or not, they are funny and I hope this blows up and spreads. If more people end up knowing about this remix over Rina's, then this is the kind of bad publicity that is good publicity.
What ppl may be missing is that this ain't really targeted at us. When I search Rina Sawayama on Spotify the first thing that comes up in autocomplete is Eve Psych, you don't even have to scroll down to Album sections where it'll show as the first album. The reward is branding/name recognition that will help expand their base rather than monetary from streams.
Like tiktok dance challenges, I think it's a novel and cost efficient way to bring in new listeners from different demographics, this time taking advantage of a pre-existing highly catchy AND customizable song. I'm guessing they probably got the idea from the open mic challenge which was a genius move itself. That likely gave them a lot data points and ideas and they ran with it.
This will be the fourth official collab after Bibi, Upsahl, and Rina. If it were up to me, after featuring a Korean, American, and British artist, I'd choose a Chinese artist if possible this time around. They have Japan covered with Jewelry (the Imase-produced city pop track). And like how they performed on Dancing Queens on the Road with Uhm Jung Hwa, they also collabed with a well known figure skater (and media darling with the gp) Marin Honda to be their sixth member on a music show in Japan earlier:
LE SSERAFIM now holds the title of the queen of collabs, and HYBE girl groups have reintroduced bonhomie back to Kpop (bonhomie's my new favorite word I learned from Pitchfork's NewJeans review and can't stop using ). Aespa wisely adjusted their style when they noticed the shifting trend and started interacting with other artists, exchanging dance challenges, and even opened up personal insta accts. Will be interesting to see if the crush groups (girl and princess/chaebol) will feel the need and come up with a smooth way to make some adjustments. So far, it seems not.
