Because they were counting them out already after the mess of Girls era and such a long hiatus of more than a year and many new groups debuting and taking the spotlight.

They really made a solid fanbase that waited for them and is paying it off.

I just hope that now the GGs battle is stronger than ever sm won't make them take such long hiatus after each release

Girls only underwhelmed compared to their previous success though... there are plenty of groups that would love their songs to flop like Girls did. Also, it was still within the top 10 from what I can recall. If anything I could see that the hiatus may have put a bit of a dampener on their initial hype.

Aespa is hard carried by their fandom in certain occasions. Their public relevance went down since NL due to competition

Correction, it was only for 10 months but I understand why it feel longer than that. They're still a rookie that debut only 2 years ago yet sm treated them like a senior group with only 1 cb a year. Did they remind me of bp, yes but at least bp was debuted in Japan in their 2nd year despite only releasing 1 digital single.

Even with it underperforming, Girls still managed to enter top 10 and peaked at top 8. In a general perspective, that's still a good performance. I hate how people have double standards for aespa (and most top groups actually). If Girls was produced by other group and still charted as it did, people will count it as a hit. I mean, don't get me wrong, I don't deny it as an underperformance for aespa. It did underperformed compared to their previous releases but people here and from other sites are writing it off as a complete flop and the end of it all when truth is it actually did quite well for an underperformance. With the way people write Girls off, you would assume it failed to enter all major charts with how seemingly career ender people made it out to be.
