Yall remember how back in the day SM was the "buying" company but nothing ever came out of it?

  • They bought Woollim when Infinite was at their peak but nothing came out of it except for WooyoungxKey and Lovelyz referring to themselves as SM group on a variety and getting relentlessly mocked by everyone?

Or so we thought :pepe-narrow-eyes: Now that SM is, as per their own statement, "afraid" that all the best trainees and personnel will be transferred to Hybe if deal goes through, is that what happened behind the scenes at Woollim? When we were all looking for Infinite getting SM treatment, it was the staff that was getting it? Yikes if true but that would kinda explain Woollim's downfall.

I really thought Infinite would become one of the top groups under SM, one of my biggest disappointments :pepe-peaking:

  • maybe it bit different..

    I think for power balance?
it needed to have a Big 3 or Big 4 not remove them
    for a healthy competition

most of us want another big company in the making
    to challenge the Big 3/4
to have a Big 5 join the battle of the top power

  • When it comes to entertainment I don't believe monopoly is even a possibility, so I am not worried. Monopolies exist in tech for example, cause it is hard to just start a company and start selling smartphones.

In Kpop industry there were and will always be surprise acts that will give a rise to another company. Bighit was a company that was managing 2AM for JYP. Just one act brought them to top. Now we have KQ with Ateez doing better than last 3 YG boy groups.

  • S‍orry for bringing this thread b‍ack up, just out of curiosity, is W‍oollim still under S‍M right n‍ow?

According to Namuwiki, W‍oollim is n‍o longer controlled by S‍M, though S‍M may still hold a stake in the company:

"However, in S‍M C&C's third quarter quarterly report released in early November, it was revealed that 71% of W‍oollim's shares were sold to a third p‍arty on September 30. . As a result, S‍M C&C was freed f‍rom dependence and affiliated relationships by owning only 29% of the shares. N‍ow it's b‍ack to being an independent company again. In S‍M C&C's audit report released in Ma‍rch 2019, it was reported that the shareholding ratio was reduced fro‍m 29% to 27.42%."

  • The difference is that SM was buying company but these company had a total freedom and were manage as complete different entity

You just have to look at how aespa and billie debuted very closely to each other

    And never interacted

While HYBE have a complete different vision

They are buying company and put HYBE worker at the head of these company

So even if they are different company they are still manage and control by HYBE

Hybe is working with these companies in a way that this company are strip of their independancy

To understand more easily you just have too look at how kpop fans are talking about groups

You never see kpop fans talk about Lsrf, Boynextdoor or illit using their company name, but under HYBE

On the other side you'll never see people talk about Billie, or brown eyed girls as Sm artist

  • I dont think SM bought to manage it, its more as investment like how they do with Mystic and esteem. They doesnt disturb the management and manage in their own with their own identity. Its opposite with Hybe when they combine the labels management under 1 company direction.
