What do you think about idol "duality"?

  • I remember cherryshiii made a thread about it a long time ago and people were like "idol duality is overrated and that every human has duality"

But now that we have a new batch of users, what do you think about idol duality, in general? Do you use the term or is it something that you acknowledge but don't speak about it a lot? Or do you recognize the difference between their cuter, more laid-back side and their more professional, performance, and possibly "🔥" side but don't use the terminology "duality"? Or do you think that the term is completely overrated and that it shouldn't be used since every human being has a duality?

Some examples (yes, I'm using Twice members)

(btw, if you haven't watched this...stop slacking and do it now because the way she goes from all cute, smiley and laughing to 🔥 is so smooth...)

  • I personally think that versatility is the better word for it.

It's usually defined as an idol's ability to do different concepts. But I also define it as them being able to go from cuteness and being more laid-back to be more professional.

Versatility, imo, is a talent and requires practice but duality is natural and something that we should all have in common.

(like your talking and joking around with your friends before choir class starts but as soon as the music starts playing, you turn a mental light switch on and you are lightning-focused. I'm sure anyone who's been in a choir or another performing art knows about this.)

  • it's bullshit

They are performers, they are performing to represent the songs feeling.

Sometimes that's being bright and cheerful, sometimes it's being arrogant and confident, sometimes it's sth else.

I don't agree with you here.

    That comes from inside.

You need to be a performer yes. But it shows if there is no natural feeling behind it.

Something like acting. You need talent for it.

  • I’m smiling and now I’m just made an angry face all within a millisecond. I have such good duality

Yep, that was the main argument from some people.

But I'm more talking about when it's more genuine. Or when they're performing and acting to match the concept and song. I feel like anyone can change their expression and have it not be genuine.

For instance, you probably didn't go immediately from genuinely happy to genuinely angry when making those expressions :/

but how do you know if an idol is being genuine? there’s not many probable examples of this happening and when it is, it’s like “idol was happy one second, gets mad when shoe gets untied zeptosecond later”

See I used to think that about most forms of art

But after some personal experience I realized it's same as every other field. You have to study it and practice it.

I guess you can also use when idols make a mistake or get scared on stage, laugh a bit and then immediately go back to being professional.

But this is still what I call versatility, not duality.

  • they're idols that's what they are trained to do

if they have duality or versatility or whatever great - if not no biggie

and ultimately remember what we see of them is only maybe a tiny fraction of their overall personality since it's on camera - a show/a performance/an act - their true personalities might be totally different off camera aka dahyun is a lot more shy and reserved off camera
