Is there a point to have a strong moral opinion about a kpop thing but not be willing to follow it up with a boycott?

  • Awhile back there was an article about alot of male idols going room salons and buying sex essentially.

There were alot of users who had essays on how that is immoral and men who do it are trash but doged the question when someone asked them if they would cancel their favs for going to room salons.

That's just one of the many exam I could think of

So it there a point to be so loud about sth you consider morally corrupt if you are gonna still throw money at it?

Sounds like virtue signaling to me

  • I'm a few steps ahead of you all, I never buy official merch to begin with.

    :pepe-use-head:

But on a serious note, I see your point. Personally, if an idol did something like that, I would unstan in a heartbeat with no hesitation. I wouldn't feel comfortable supporting that, directly or indirectly. I won't do it for all issues of course, but if it's a big enough deal to me, I'll do what needs to be done with no problem.

  • Well most fans will give their favs the benefit of the doubt and probably wouldn't boycott or stop supporting unless it's revealed to be 100% true

And it's not like you'll just stop supporting all male idols because of that incident. You wish for the best and hope the people involved don't include your groups

    Everyone does this really

I would dodge the question too, cause frankly it's dumb. To me it seems like the people asking that were seeking to start fanwars

  • How so on the last point?

If you think all the men who go room salons are trash, then your fav gets caught in one of them, why wouldn't they count?

Another case is with racism and cultural insensitivity

People are very much vocal about the issues but just defend when its their group involved.

    It's selective morality

  • True. I'd drop them if it was true beyond a shadow of a doubt, but if we still don't know, then I won't do anything. Sometimes idols get falsely accused (Woojin) or we don't know the full story for a while (Garam/Jimin). Agreed as well. You said that pretty well. At least for me.

  • You do raise a good point

However I'm referring to what happens in unconfirmed rumors or allegations

Whenever there's any type of scandal, the first thing most people do is assume their faves are likely to not being involved if it's not confirmed they are

I mean just as an example, if SKZ were accused of something with no foundation or source, I would definitely be on their side

But as sad as it is lots of fans would try to exclude their idols from the narrative even if it were confirmed by authorities that they were involved in the salons, predatory circles or less extreme scandals like racism or drugs

Kinda how despite receiving lots of hate, Seungri still recieved inital defense from fans in the Burning Sun scandal (from what I've heard)

  • if my faves are doing anything questionable, even if its not confirmed i will stand firm on what i believe in, and will stop openly supporting them at that moment and will wait. after it gets confirmed or there is too much evidence to deny it then i'll stop supporting them entirely.

  • I say if you have a strong opinion towards certain things you should stick to your principles even when it involves your own faves. Otherwise it’s hypocrite.

I give people the benefit of doubt and I won’t drop my faves because of unconfirmed rumors . And so wouldn’t I judge other fans for that.

  • If we were so morally virtuous we'd stop stanning k-pop altogether because it's our money and support which is supporting the system of child abuse going on in the industry.

we will never get to be that morally virtuous

  • I'm of the opinion that my morals are mine alone...I don't seek to neccessarily judge all others based on my own morals

sure there are people who are dodgy or morally bad but maybe in their opinion they aren't immoral because they have different morals to me...

and thus there are some people that even though they say I have strong morals in regards to xyz issue what they really mean is it's a personal moral that doesn't neccessarily translate to other people or it might not be as strong as they professs...
