“Trying to loose weight is fatphobic ”

  • omg, this reminds me of something I saw a while ago. There's this doctor on youtube and he said something about how you have to lose weight if your weight is affecting your physical health(such as high cholesterol, high blood sugar and conditions that might cause you to die).

A bunch of people tried to cancel him on reddit by calling him fatphobic. He made a reaction video to that and slapped them in their faces with medical facts!

so it's not only one case, there are more

health is fatphobic i guess :pepe-shrug:

  • I think what she’s saying is : are you trying to loose weight because society expects you to look a certain way or are you just exercising and staying active and healthy. The margin for a healthy weight is a lot larger than say being an extremely small size after all. Like idols gain a bit of chubby cheeks and suddenly they’re labeled fat and harassed.

Tbh the number of people who just jumped her here without even thinking about what’s being said

Anyway I don’t have a strong stance here. Idc about weight as an issue to even champion for it. My priorities are elsewhere.

My general stance on these type of things is that discussing why certain trends exists broadly does not mean we are contesting peoples right to their choices.

We can discuss about people wanting to loose weight because of certain toxic societal standards (whether these standards exist or not is a separate discussion topic) and have it not be taken as a personal attack against ourselves.

    Just my two cents.

  • LMAO

    "licensed therapist"???

    NO WAAAY DUDE LMAOOOO

    anyway this is insane

I am skinny and I keep eating healthy way BECAUSE MY LIFE GOT SO MUCH BETTER I never was fat (I am not going to lie to have some sympath I just felt bad because I didnt liked my arm in particular I cant show it even tho it aint fat in my head it was wtv it doesnt make sense) but I felt bad about my weight anyway and I talked about that about my therapist and she said that it would be good because it can even help my anxiety and guess what it DID supeer and she alarmed me to keep eating healthy and don't go all my way and stop eating you know thats how a therapist should do? try to make you healthier? and try to knock some sense on the client?? (like mine warning about not going on a dangerous path)

anyway even tho I was never fat I used to eat BAD and after I changed my eating and now eat mostly healthy and basically exercise everyday I am so much better not just skinnier this is not the point but my mind is much better and stronger, of course I have my same problems (I don't feel too comfy sharing all but yeah) but now it is all much more manageable

losing weight is healthy for body (not even argument here, everyone already said it) BUT MIND TOO!

to think this is coming from a supposed therapist is WEEEIRD

  • worrying about your own health isn't being fatphobic.

  • Even if someone lost weight for “societal purposes”, which I’d prefer to say someone personally wanting to have an appearance they find most ideal for themselves, that’s still not fatphobic

Fatphobia is discriminating people who are fat or fatness as a whole, not when someone wants to loose weight for themselves whatever the reason it is

People like that girl are so insecure about themselves that instead of working on bettering their bodies, or being content/confident enough with their current body, they try to guilt trip others who work on their body to shame them for achieving something they can only wish to aspire having, which is a better body

    It’s not woke, it’s jealousy

  • Plenty of people exercise for the sake of looking good, and I don't honestly think that this now means that they hate fat people and would discriminate against them as the term fatphobic would imply. It's weird of them to spin everything to be an attack on their existence, when literally the only people they are harming are themselves with this victim complex that nobody cares about

Bias exists implicitly without us realizing and we often apply these biases to ourselves first. This is what I mean by not being open to a broader discussion without feeling personally attacked. Our preferences in skin tones, our preferences in race, our preferences in how we dress and eat and act…. Many things can be harmless many things can also be informed by toxic societal standards.

Why is the idea that us applying certain beauty standards on ourself means we will unknowing apply those to others when there is enough research and studies to show indeed these biases are implicit? Why does this ruffle so many feathers? Implicit biases are part of human existence acknowledging them doesn’t mean you’re a bad person.

Do you know my company has MANDATORY course everyone has to take on addressing these biases? It’s a very real part of life.

Anyway like I said previously I do NOT care about weight and discussions around it as a cause worth fighting for. It’s just that the idea of everyone being so excessively against the idea that personal choices are informed by preexisting biases is unwarranted.

  • See my responses on implicit bias.

  • Being fatphobic is obv wrong, everyone deserves respect no matter their weight, but somebody trying to take care of their body is not fatphobic. And it’s nobodies business what you’re doing to your body, or why, but your own. Everyone else should learn to keep their opinions to themselves. (Unless they’re your doctor or you explicitly asked for advice)

Edit: losing weight just because you wanna look hotter or feel more beautiful is also not fatphobic. Do whatever you want to feel the best you can about your body. What that means is up to you

  • Working out and looking good makes you feel better physically, and you feel happier about how you look.

  • She should get her licensed taking away. As a therapist you should refrain from biased statements.

If she was talking about how there are people who want to loose weight because of societal standards I think there is room for discussions. But she straight out said everyone who wants to loose weight is being fatphobic… which is a wild generalized statement. Also not everyone looses weight to be a size zero.
