One hit wonders?

  • But then what is your definition of a hit? Perhaps providing some examples would help.

The problem is that there's no agreed upon criteria, which is why I asked the OP the following initially:

My definition of a hit is Rollin. Very hyped up, insane charting, many wins, recognition, exposure etc it was a big domestic hit that even went big among the international kpop community

How are we ride stats that not of a hit? People over here claim songs with much less as hits. Way lesser stats. 10 weeks on gaon top10 and 500M points. How high should a hit go?

Again, it depends on what do you consider a hit. I haven't even heard of that song and I admit that I'm very updated with releases and etc,I doubt majority of kpop stans know it internationally but even in Korea, it's nothing compared to what Rollin achieved. Of course I don't expect a song to go as big as it as it's very hard to replicate the success but at least having more achievements in Korea would be nice

I mean, "I haven't heard of it" isn't exactly a metric. There are loads of songs from groups I don't pay attention to that I'm sure do very well, but I don't care enough to follow it.

If you're saying We Ride doesn't count, then you'd also be saying that OMG's Dun Dun Dance wasn't a hit, because that song performed very similarly to We Ride. Or does DDD count because you've heard it before?

That is a tough, but valid standard. I think a lot of people would use the term "national hit" for those types of songs. Now in that case, there are going to be very few one-hit wonders, simply because the bar to achieve a hit in the first place is so high.

You're taking this out of context and twisting my words. I didn't say the song isn't a hit just because I didn't hear it. I told you my bigger reasoning already, the song didn't perform half as good as rollin. If definition of hit is any relatively well charting song then we should consider nearly every release a hit

  • Winner is not a one hit wonder. I don't follow them but they are one of the best performing 3rd gen boygroups on charts

Yep, i was shocked, they have as many #1 hits on Melon Daily as BTS, a total of four 8|8|.

And for those mentioning IKON, they also have two others songs that hit #1 on Melon Daily. That's more than literally 99.9% of BGs since 2014.

  • I think what all these threads boils down to is the definition and criteria of what is a hit...

obviously everyone's definitions is subjective and for the most part instead of arguing over x versus y the true argument is the criteria and weight as to what defines a hit...

now if that can be solved it becomes a objective determination...
