I really realized this when working on the NCT badges, where even super pale people got whitewashed. Sometimes it feels like people adjusting the color in photoshop by just tweaking the curves and not realizing they’re blowing out the skin tone color to make other elements brighter but it’s often so intentional it’s disgusting.
Haechan is the most blatant, but everyone gets whitewashed..

Also, like why do people make already pale people lighter? Here’s Jaehyun unwhitewashed. He’s already much paler than the other two’s natural coloring.

Kun is also very pale (members jokes they didn’t think anyone could be paler than Jaehyun and then they met Kun), but he also gets super whitewashed.)

I love that picture. Yeonjun has such a nice golden glow originally but they keep white washing him. Thankfully one by one they using the snow app or what is it called less these days.

yeah colorism is a big problem in my country too
we openly advertise skin whitening creams lol
our colonizers put in the idea that the ruling class is fair skinned while the working class will be dark skinned, fair skinned people were given government jobs etc and this discrimination never went away
the world is a crazy place. meanwhile in the ex-colonizers countries tanned skin is trending.
in korea it may come from the past. were the common people and slaves work on the field getting tanned from the sun while the lords and higher ups sit in the office or watch their workers protected by a sunscreen.
Today that may seem look stupid considering how with globalisation people with all skin colours living together. But there is still a serious social issue that the tanned workers like delivery guys, construction worker or farmer arent usual as well off as the office workers who didnt get exposed to the sun that much. And that people still keep that mindset.

Omg, that second photo looks unnaturally pale, like vampire pale.
The first pic looks odd to me too tho. I feel like is is darker than he normally is... or am I just used to lightened pics of him?

I live in sunny state with lots of beaches and have a friend whose family comes from a country with a big colorism issue. She would lay out on the beach with us on vacation and then go home and apply whitening lotion. Crazy

Besides the social issues of whitewashing, my other problem with some of the whitewashing edits is the fact their facial features also get washed out.
Idols in general are already attractive whether they fit Korean beauty standards or have gotten plastic surgery, none of them are particularly “ugly” in a sense. So it’s odd that they insist on editing the hell out of their pictures.

Oh that's true. I think a lot of their foundations have sunscreen so it could cause flash but yeah, blend it down and protect your neck too
