What do you guys think about Demon Slayer being the biggest manga of all times in Japan?

  • Like the explosive interest in demon slayer is unprecedented. I was just seeing some numbers for manga here https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/List_of_best-selling_manga

And these are the average sales per volume (other long running manga ofc have more total sales)

    • Demon Slayer : 6.52mil

To give context Dragon Ball is at 6.1mil, One Piece at 4.8mil, Naruto 3.4mil, AOT&FMA 2.9 mil

That’s some insane numbers for a manga that’s not even that old. Like I don’t think anything is even coming close in the foreseeable future lol.

For me personally yeah I really loved season 1 of the anime and in the Manga I really loved the entertainment district arc but over all it’s more 8/10 than 10/10 for me.

One thing I can say is Tanjiro is extremely likable compared to many other Shonen protagonists. But yeah what do y’all think. And why do you think it’s literally so explosively popular by many folds compared to other manga?

  • I mean, this doesn't surprise me.

It's good. The plot is entertaining, and the visuals are excellent throughout. Which I cannot say for a lot of shounen anime.

I also like the fact the author didn't taint the story by dragging it out for more profit. They had a story to tell, and they told it. Simple as that.

I absolutely agree with you I'm so happy that the Author end it like he/she want to end it :|:|:|

  • Some days ago I would have been annoyed and scratching my head. While I watched the anime religiously, I always thought the story was pretty lackluster and underwhelming compared to its animation.

However after the latest season I was too curious about what comes next so I made plans to read the manga. This was the first time in my life I've opted to read the manga instead of waiting for the anime btw so that's already special. After finishing it within 2 days my thoughts on it have completely changed.

While the story isn't ground breaking it is still well written and very enjoyable to both read and understand. Nothing is dragged out and everything ties up nicely in the end. The characters are also very likeable even the hashira who give terrible first impressions and the demons as well.

A personal win for me is how the fanservice isn't overwhelming to the point of being distracting. The author doesn't make every female a walking pair of boobs and I appreciated that.

  • Big stretch, One Piece got their numbers tanked with the rather slow start and the low sales of the past 5 years but in its prime it was very comparable to Demon Slayers sales. It also tends to release half as much volume per year than Demon Slayers which speedrunned the entire story in few years.

The big question is if Demon Slayers can build a brand like Dragon Ball, One Piece, Naruto did in the past.

Your question is interesting. Imo the duration of DS hype will largely depend on the promotion done by Ufotable in the future.

If Ufotable sticks with 10-12 episodes season, the hype will be kept ig.

Btw, Demon Slayer sold more than than double the prime of One Piece (82M vs 35 M). ;-)

    Demon slayers in 2020 :

82 million copies sold, 10 new volumes. Around 8.2 million average if you don't consider previous volumes (probably inaccurate)

    One Piece in 2011 :

35 million copies sold, 4 new volumes. Around 8.75 million average for each new volume (probably inaccurate).

When I said Demon Slayers speedrunned their story, I really mean it, 10 volume in a single year is extremely wild, I think the highest number of volume One Piece had in a year is 6 in the mid 2000s. One Piece averaged 4/5 volume a year for almost 20 year, if it went as fast as kimetsu we would be at volume 200+.

    EDIT :

Mb I compared wrong publishing dates (Japanese and English ones). Keeping the original cz its still useful info.

I didn't double check at first cz it was totally what I remembered about sales per volume tendencies it had in my country (France). Demon Slayers outsolding One Piece for an entire year but getting beaten on the volume average. In Japan it's another story and Idk how much Oricon count overseas sales (if they count it all).

France is the 2nd best selling market in the world as far as I know so it's imo some useful information, though the market tends to be dominated by older mangas. Japanese are more willing to pass onto something else. Demon Slayers peak popularity in Japan is probably unrivaled ever, maybe only Dragon Ball reached remotely close to this peak though a lot of the sales were after it finished when Demon Slayers broke record during its life cycle.

The anime will probably help Demon Slayers more in the West than in Japan, as it already made its mark on this market

  • Hum I remembered that the first edition of Demon Slayer flopped in France. Fortunately, the manga grew on people heart. ;-)

As for the volumes sales in Japan, I sincerely believe that they will increase again with the anime.

You just need to compare 2020's sales (82M) with 2021 sales (30M), it's still huge. ;-)

I really think the hype will continue in Japan especially with the merchandising (thanks to Nezuko).

But I agree with you with DS having more hype in the western countries.

    I'm also french btw ;-)
