Ppl aren’t interested in their songs
You know I always wondered how a group with less than 3 million l monthly listeners on Spotify and no substantial fame in Korea/Japan/China/sea for over 800k sales in a single album
They seem like really good stan attractors but not a group that is good at gaining a casual fanbase.
Bts excels at that, and they’ve always have even before they were the top bg.

It's not that they're doing worse, other newer BGs are debuting, gaining more interest and are growing bigger, so Ateez seem to be falling behind. YT policy changed so primarily int fan streaming decreased, and they also had their comeback at the worst time.
Ateez I think have trouble attracting newer fans (esp K-fans) compared to other bgs, they have a smaller fandom size compared to even the Boyz now, but what stans they have are INCREDIBLY dedicated so I'm not worried. It's def what int fans like about them that aren't as attractive to k-fans so they'll always have this disparity.
There are groups that have managed to turn that around, see Monsta X.

Neither was BTS? Time for a new excuse
BTS grew big at a different time. Also I doubt a case like that would happen again. Also BH had a lot of investor links, compared to KQ.

So you are saying Ateez wouldn't be more popular if they were from big3? Because they totally would with the company stans support, exposure, media play and high budget from big3. That's the truth.
If you want another answer besides that, they haven't showed their full versality in title tracks/concept or when they started doing it it was already too late. They are similar to Monsta X in that way, that also became very stereotyped early in their career because the company preferred the safe route and familiar sound/concept for title track so that prevented them from gaining fans because non-fans already knew what to "expect". The solution is to reinvent themselves and bring something unexpected in every comeback.
I'm not saying that either of the groups mentioned aren't versatile, just that the choices their companies made for them didn't help their image. One group managed to bounce back so the other can too.

Their music isn't the popular kind
-
- They kind of exhausted their concept. In the beginning, it was smart of KQ to find a niche and make Ateez stick to a very specific concept and sound, it helped establish them despite coming from a lesser known company. But whenever they changed up something, next comeback they returned to their more stereotypical sound. This worked with Wonderland, but not so much with Fireworks. Then they took their sweet time to come back after Kingdom pulled them from the sight of non-fans, with a song that failed to stand out next to what the current top 3 had released. Maybe this wouldn't have happened had they not come back before Kingdom.
- There is only so many groups that can grow at rapid pace at once. Enhypen was guaranteed to get lots of attention from the beginning. Maybe if X1 hadn't disbanded someone else would have been pushed out back then too. It's just like that, nothing to be done about it.
Well, they still have a big and dedicated fanbase. They'll be fine.

As someone who loved Ateez at the start, I feel like their music has dropped off, badly. The last release I enjoyed was Thanxx/Inception and even with that I knew they weren't at their best. Since then I watch every new MV and nothing connects.
They need to invest in good quality music. Ateez are nowhere near the point where they can coast on mediocrity because their huge fanbase will hype anything. I think they have/had the potential to reach that point, but KQ are fumbling the ball. I hope they recover.

Several reasons:
1. Their concept is limiting. It's cute they are pirates and all but it boxes them into one image/stereotype and makes them less friendly to a bigger demographic. I've never been a fan of strict concepts like ''werewolves'', ''pirates'', etc., vague concepts always work better. So I would say not smart enough branding.
2. Their music isn't bad but their title track choices are questionable/inconsistent. They promote way too many songs at once (so neither can marinate properly) when they should focus on one that has the biggest potential. Also, a mistake to let fans choose their title tracks for most of their career... fans have no idea what is best even if they think they do.
3. They lack at least one member that stands out enough (''it boy'') to attract non-fans in SK and help their fandom grow there enough to lessen the burden of i-fans who get exhausted carrying every metric/multitasking. Either the company has to push one member a bit more or it has to happen naturally.
