NCT 2018 - Black on Black
Choreographer: PREPIX Ill
NCT came together for the first all-unit album in Empathy for one of their most iconic choreos - the spectacular Black on Black. It shows off the strength of the dancers, as well as the formations, motion and power that make NCT choreo so memorable. This is literally a performance piece - the songwriter has mentioned how the choreography was designed first and he built the song with the other writers to match the choreo, which is of course the opposite of how it's done!
The choreo was made by NCT's choreographer PREPIX Ill and features all 18 members. (I told you he was responsible for some of their most memorable work!)
A few notes here:
- Jungwoo and Lucas are making their debut on this album - Lucas is one of the few members who actually raps on the song. Kun appeared on Without You two years earlier but these performances are his first big performances on this type of stage.
- Only 5 of the 18 members actually rap on the track (Taeyong, Mark, Lucas, Jeno, Yuta)
- Members at center during the choreo (in order) and their ages at the time, because it's quite impressive:
- Taeyong (main dancer 127 - age 22)
- Mark (main dancer 127/Dream - age 18)
- Jisung (main dancer Dream - age 16!!!)
- Jaehyun (lead dancer 127 - age 21)
- Jeno (lead dancer Dream - age 18)
- Yuta (lead dancer in Dream - age 21)
- Lucas (WayV - age 19)
- Taeyong finishes at center
- WayV's main dancer Ten has the dance break at 2:40.
- The members sliding on the floor when Mark is rapping in that slick sequence: Johnny, Jungwoo, Lucas, Jaemin.
- The members jump pirouetting in the back are Johnny and Haechan.
- The members on top of the pyramids are Mark, Taeyong and Yuta.
As always, the practice first for a clear view of the choreo:
This is an AWESOME video that I highly recommend watching that shows the movement of members in the choreo. It's really cool!
This is a performance piece best seen in performance! (This performance is lot like last year's "Resonance", with performances of sub-unit songs first. Enjoyable if you have the time. I've timestamped to start from Black on Black)
More performance views of Black on Black because it deserves it.
However, this video is shot well to show off the choreo
Fun footnote: The choreo originally debuted with a simpler version at 2016 MAMA with fewer members.
